17-year-old boy dies in 'tragic accident' during school field trip | UK News

A 17-year-old student has died after suffering a drowning at sea during a school trip, in what his college principal has described as a “tragic accident”.

The boy was part of a group from Uxbridge College, west London, who had visited West Wittering, a seaside town near Chichester, Sussex, to celebrate the end of term.

Around 1pm on Tuesday, emergency services received a call about the young man's well-being.

He was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead and his family have been notified, Sussex Police said.

Uxbridge College principal Dylan McTaggart said: “This has been a tragic incident that has had a huge impact on everyone here. Our priority now is to look after everyone affected.

“We have enlisted the help of qualified counsellors and will be providing staff and professional support to our community in the coming days and weeks.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, and we ask that you respect their privacy as they mourn the loss of their child.”

Detective Inspector Darren Taylor, from Sussex Police, said police were investigating with support from the Health and Safety Executive to establish the full facts of the incident.

He said: “This was an absolutely tragic incident and I would like to express my sincere condolences to the boy’s family at this heartbreaking time.”

He appealed for anyone with information to contact him.

This isn't the only death to have occurred in recent years at West Wittering, a resort that is very popular with visitors when the weather is clear.

In September 2023, the body of a man who went missing from West Wittering Beach was reported to have been found near the Hayling Island lifeboat station.

In 2012, a man died while trying to help two children in the sea.

According to the website, the main beach area on the property operates a flag-based water safety system and lifeguards are on duty from mid-May to mid-September.
