US government officials who resigned over Gaza policy issue joint statement for the first time

CNN —

U.S. government employees who publicly resigned in protest of the Biden administration's Gaza policies issued a joint statement Tuesday for the first time, saying they were united in a shared belief that it is our collective responsibility to speak out and outlining steps they believe the U.S. government should take.

The 12 signatories submitted their resignations at different points during the nearly nine-month conflict between Israel and Hamas, with one resigning last Tuesday. Many of them have spoken publicly, including to CNN, of their decision to leave the government in protest of the administration's policies. As CNN reported last month, officials had begun to band together to pressure the government to change course.

Tuesday's statement was issued in observance of the July 4 holiday, emphasizing that as our nation celebrates its Independence Day, each of us remembers that we resigned from government not to end that oath, but to continue to uphold it; not to end our commitment to service, but to extend it.

The administration's policy in Gaza is a failure and a threat to U.S. national security, they wrote in a joint statement titled “Service in Dissent.”

The United States’ diplomatic cover and continued flow of arms to Israel have ensured our undeniable complicity in the massacres and forced starvation of a besieged Palestinian population in Gaza. This is not only morally reprehensible and a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and U.S. law, but it has also put America in a difficult position, they continue, arguing that it has endangered the lives of military personnel and diplomats.

President Joe Biden has faced pressure abroad and at home over his support for Israel in its war in Gaza, a conflict that has claimed tens of thousands of civilian lives, displaced millions and caused extreme famine across the enclave. While the administration’s rhetoric has grown harsher, with warnings that Israel must do more to protect civilians and allow more aid, policies have remained largely unchanged.

The resigning officials argue that U.S. policy toward Gaza has been deeply damaging not only to U.S. relations in the region, but also to our global credibility, the credibility of American values, and the credibility of the West, a situation that is particularly perilous in this era of strategic competition.

The joint statement contains six recommendations to the US government. Among them is a call for the US government to faithfully implement the law, stating that it is abundantly clear that the administration is currently deliberately violating several US laws and is attempting to deny or distort facts, exploit loopholes or manipulate processes to ensure a continued flow of lethal weapons to Israel.

It also calls on the government to use all necessary and available pressure tactics to bring an immediate end to the conflict, to increase humanitarian aid, to support the self-determination of the Palestinian people, to strengthen oversight and accountability mechanisms within the executive branch, and to support the freedom of expression of protesters in universities.

The resigning officials who previously spoke to CNN said many of their former colleagues felt the same way they did but were unable to resign. The joint statement ends with a message to those colleagues, telling them that their voices matter.

We encourage you to keep pushing. In our experience, no decision point is too small to be challenged. So when you serve in government, use your voice, write letters to your agency leaders, and communicate your disagreements to your team, and they will continue. Speaking up has a snowball effect, inspiring others to speak up. There is strength in numbers, and we urge you not to be complicit.
