New figures show that consumer spending on car purchases is growing three times faster than spending on public transport.

An AA analysis of Office for National Statistics data found that the UK will spend around £37.4 billion on new and used cars in 2023, up 6% from five years ago.

By comparison, consumer spending on public transportation, including rail, bus, air and taxi, was $60.9 billion, up 2 percent from five years ago.

Jack Cousin, the AA's head of roads policy, argued the figures showed how important motoring was to the British people – and to the nation's finances.

He said: “The latest figures from the ONS highlight the UK's reliance on cars and the huge sums they generate for the economy, not to mention the VAT and other taxes they pay.

“Cars are not just a necessity, they are essential in many ways. Even if car use were to shift to public transportation, the impact on the economy and other income generation would be enormous.

“Just think how much money a municipality would lose if too many cars didn't show up at their parking lots or got fined for not needing a parking permit.

“The key question is whether the money consumers spend on cars will be converted into public transport revenues that can cover the infrastructure investments that make it possible.

“It seems like a pretty good deal for the public purse to have traveling consumers pay for their own transportation and its maintenance, and then tax them heavily.”

Much of the $78.6 billion spent on personal transportation went to running cars, with spending on fuel and lubricants up 20% since 2018, to $41.7 billion.

Decrease in new car purchases

But new figures show that new car purchases by private buyers have fallen for the ninth straight month, despite consumers spending more on cars than on public transport.

According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), new car registrations by private consumers fell 15.3 per cent in June to 67,625 units, down from 79,798 units in the same period last year.

Ian Plummer, commercial director at Auto Trader, said: “With the average price of a new car rising by almost 40 per cent over the last five years, it is clear that costs are to blame.”

“Manufacturers are responding with discounts, but many buyers are not responding in kind, leaving them with no choice but to turn to used goods.

“Whoever forms the next government will need to address the economics of electric vehicles and provide long-term stability to the market.”

Environmental impact

Despite the AA’s opinion, the billions of pounds consumers spend on cars every year are having a clear impact on Britain’s roads, with overall traffic volumes set to rise by 2.2% in 2023 compared to the previous year.

As more cars are on the road, air pollution is also increasing, making it one of the biggest environmental health risks facing the UK public.

Burning gasoline and diesel fuel creates harmful byproducts like nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide, and vehicles emit carbon dioxide, the most common human-caused greenhouse gas.

Even electric cars emit particulate matter due to friction between tires and roads.

Researchers at University College London estimate that 48,625 adults in the UK die prematurely each year due to particulate matter pollution.

Currently, 79% of the UK exceeds the World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines for annual average levels of safe particulate matter.
