Polling stations have opened in Britain for a general election that is expected to see the opposition Labour Party win a landslide victory after nearly a decade and a half of Conservative rule.

Voting began at 7am (6am GMT) on Thursday at more than 40,000 polling stations across the country, with exit polls conducted and vote counting beginning at 10pm (9pm GMT) when polls close.

The centre-left Labour Party is expected to win a general election for the first time since 2005, with polls leading up to the election predicting its biggest ever victory.

But 61-year-old Labour leader Keir Starmer took nothing for granted as he urged voters not to stay home. He said Britain’s future was on the ballot, but change would only happen if you vote.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called the election six months earlier than expected against a grim backdrop of a cost-of-living crisis, a declining national health system and growing distrust in institutions.

The 44-year-old Sunak, who was widely known for his disastrous campaign that drew public outrage last month when it emerged he had canceled a D-Day celebration early and given a campaign interview, said the outcome was not predetermined.

But on Wednesday, as opinion polls showed the Conservatives' crushing defeat, he acknowledged that Labour looked set to win an overwhelming majority and urged voters to back his party to limit its rivals' unchecked power.
