Voters went to the polls on Thursday to end five years of Conservative government and decide who will run the country.

It's the first general election since December 2019, but we've seen two changes in the prime minister since then. Here's what to expect today.

When will the new Prime Minister take office?

If a party leader wins a majority in the election, they are invited to visit the King and form a new government the morning after the vote.

First, the outgoing prime minister will go to Buckingham Palace to submit his resignation. Then, the incoming prime minister will go to the palace to meet the King. Then, the new prime minister will drive to Downing Street, where TV cameras will gather outside the door of Number 10 to record his first speech.

Meanwhile, senior political advisers enter Downing Street through a side door in Horseguards Parade and prepare to welcome the Prime Minister along with the Cabinet Office secretary and other civil servants.

What will the Prime Minister's first day look like?

After addressing the nation and being welcomed to 10 Downing Street, the new Prime Minister will receive a day-one briefing and formal advice from civil servants. This includes information on national security, key issues ahead and decisions that need to be made immediately.

One of the new prime minister's first tasks will be to write a letter to the commanders of Britain's four nuclear submarines, giving them instructions on what to do if a nuclear attack were to break communications between their submarines and Britain. The letter replaces the previous prime minister's instructions.

Another pressing task is to appoint ministers, even down to the most junior positions in the cabinet. This process tends to take several days, with the most important positions, such as finance minister, being filled first.

There are some more prosaic decisions to be made, including where to live. The next prime minister is expected to move his family and life into No 10 Downing Street at the same time as the outgoing prime minister vacates the building.

When will the new parliament convene?

Members must be sworn in on Tuesday, July 9, five days after the election. This will be done in order of seniority, and the House will elect a new Speaker.

No substantive parliamentary or legislative business can be conducted until the first Royal Speech, in which the government sets out the priorities and agenda for the upcoming parliamentary session. The Royal Speech and the opening of parliament are scheduled for Wednesday 17 July.
