Kendrick Lamar “Not Like Us” Video: Watch

The most anticipated video of the year so far is finally out.

“Not Like Us,” Kendrick Lamar’s Drake-insulting song that topped the Billboard Hot 100 and stayed on the charts for eight weeks, has had a legendary run. It’s been played in clubs and stadiums, soundtracked children’s birthday parties and inspired a compelling opening number at this year’s BET Awards.

But, despite the song dominating airwaves for two months and Kendrick performing it multiple times at the end of his June 19 concert, “The Pop Out,” fans were still hoping that the Pg. Lang captain would release an official visual. Confirmation that a video was on the way came shortly after the show aired on Amazon Prime, when Kendrick traveled to his hometown of Compton and brought the entire town out to help with the production.

And, after a series of stills from the video leaked last night, Kendrick and Pg. Lang have released the official video tonight. Directed by Kendrick and Dave Free (who also makes a cameo appearance), the video matches the energy of the fun but scathing song with a number of Lamar's lyrics coming to life. For example, there's a scene where he hits an owl piñata with a stick, another where he's slipped a Bible into his jacket, and another where a huge Compton crowd dances and engulfs him as he proclaims that “the city's back to life, we gotta get out.”

But the highlight of the video comes toward the end of the nearly six-minute clip, when Kendrick poses with his fiancée Whitney Alford and their two children before they all break out into a dance. It's a clear denial of the allegations made by Drake in his song “Family Matters,” where he claimed, among other things, that Alford and Lamar were separated and that he didn't see his children regularly.

It's hard to imagine the song getting a second wind since it still dominates the cultural conversation, but this video may just keep its momentum going.
