Good day. I will soon be informing His Majesty the King that I will be resigning from the position of Prime Minister.

I would like to first apologize to the country.

I gave my all to this.

But you have sent a clear signal that the British government must change.

To all the Conservative candidates and campaigners who worked tirelessly without success.

It breaks my heart to think of how many good colleagues I have.

I will no longer be sitting in the House of Representatives.

I appreciate their hard work and service.

As a result of this, I will step down from my position as party leader.

Not right away, but we will do so when we are formally ready to elect a successor.

After 14 years of Conservative rule, rebuilding is key.

But it is also important that the opposition plays a key role in a professional and effective manner.

When I first took office as Prime Minister, I said that my most important task was to stabilize our economy.

Inflation is back to target, mortgage rates are falling, and growth is picking up.

We have strengthened our position in the world by rebuilding relationships with our allies.

And our United Kingdom is stronger too. The Windsor Framework restored devolution to Northern Ireland and strengthened our union.

I am proud of that achievement.

I believe this country is safer, stronger and more stable than it was 20 months ago.

And we are more prosperous, more equitable and more resilient than we were in 2010.

Sir Keir Starmer was my political opponent, but he will soon be our Prime Minister.

His success in this job will be our success, and I wish him and his family happiness.

Whatever our differences in this campaign, he is a decent, public-spirited man whom I respect.

He and his family deserve our best understanding as they make this huge transition to a new life behind these doors.

It's about wrestling with one of the toughest jobs in an increasingly unstable world.
