Kendrick Lamar Releases 'Not Like Us' Video, Highlighting Compton Landmarks

Kendrick Lamar turned the visual for his diss track against Drake into a family affair.

The prolific rapper released his music video for “Not Like Us” on July 4 and it featured some very important people to him.

The song is part of what has become a very public feud between Lamar and Drake.

Not only is there a scene featuring his fiancée Whitney Alford and their two young children, but Lamar is also seen surrounded by a crowd of his fans who can be heard rapping along to his hit song.

Directed by the rapper and Dave Free, the film features several celebrities associated with the West Coast, a region favored by Compton native Lamar. Among them are NBA player DeMar DeRozan, also from Compton, and Tommy the Clown, known for inventing the West Coast dance style krumping.

The surprise speech marks the rapper's first public appearance following his feud with Drake.

In the clip, Lamar makes numerous visual nods to Drake and his career, including owls, the bird Drake uses for his OVO label.

The video was highly anticipated, especially by those who followed the recent fast and furious rap battle between Lamar and Drake.

The two rappers, who are former collaborators, have released several diss tracks, with “Not Like Us” becoming the most successful.

The video begins with Lamar doing push-ups. Many believe this is a reference to Drake's single “Push Ups,” which was a response to Lamar's insults on Metro Boomin and Future's single “Like That.”

Including his longtime love, Alford, and their children seems to be a nod to Drake's song, “Family Matters,” in which Drake implies that Alford cheated on Lamar. In his music video, Lamar and his family dance happily and seemingly oblivious to each other.

According to Billboard, “Not Like Us” debuted at number one on the Hot 100 upon its release in May and was declared the “song of the summer” by many.

Last month, Lamar performed the song five times during “The Pop Out: Ken & Friends,” a Juneteenth concert streamed live on Twitch by Amazon Music.
