This weekend, Formula One returns to the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, the home of British motor racing.

George Russell took a shock win in Austria last time out, as the Mercedes driver took advantage of a late-race collision between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris. Norris then lashed out at Verstappen, setting up their rivalry in style for Norris’ home race this weekend.

Verstappen leads the world championship by 81 points over Norris as he heads into the British GP. He won the race last year. Despite his win, Russell still sits in seventh place.

Lewis Hamilton has won at Silverstone eight times and has been on the podium in each of the last two years. The seven-time F1 world champion, who has not won since December 2021, would like nothing more than to stand on top of the podium in front of a adoring crowd.

In conditions more reminiscent of a dark November day than the start of summer in July, Britain’s leading trio of drivers were in action at Silverstone on Saturday afternoon. A qualifying session that began in drizzle ended with George Russell, Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris storming to the top of the time sheets in dry conditions, with world championship leader Max Verstappen trailing behind.

Needless to say, the British crowd of over 100,000 rejoiced in the grandstands as three British drivers occupied the top three spots on the grid for the first time since 1968.

A week after his second F1 win in Austria, Russell took the most prestigious pole position ever, edging eight-time British Grand Prix winner Hamilton by 0.141s. It marked a lockout for Mercedes' front row, a return to the glory days before Verstappen and Red Bull dominated the sport.
