Dangerous, record-breaking temperatures expected to continue to spread across U.S., forecasters say

About 130 million people were at risk Saturday and into next week from a prolonged heat wave that has already broken records for dangerously high temperatures – and is expected to break more from the East Coast to the West Coast, forecasters said.

The oppressive heat and humidity could combine to push temperatures above 100 degrees Fahrenheit in parts of the Pacific Northwest, mid-Atlantic and Northeast, said Jacob Asherman, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

In Oregon, records could be broken in cities like Eugene, Portland and Salem, Asherman said. Dozens more records could be broken across the country, Asherman added, prompting millions of people to seek relief from the heat at cooling centers from Bullhead City, Ariz., to Norfolk, Va.

“It's certainly a pretty abnormal event that we're expecting here, which looks like it's going to continue through at least the middle of the week,” Asherman said.

The National Weather Service announced Saturday that it was extending the excessive heat warning for much of the Southwest through Friday.

“A dangerous and historic heat wave has just begun in the region, with temperatures expected to peak between Sunday and Wednesday,” the National Weather Service in Las Vegas said in an updated forecast.

The excessive heat is expected to persist through Friday, the service said.

In the sweltering heat of Las Vegas, where temperatures hit 100 degrees by 10:30 a.m., Marko Boscovich said the best way to beat the heat is to sit at a slot machine with a cold beer in an air-conditioned casino.

“But you know, when sales hit triple digits, it's about the same for me,” said Boscovich, who had come from Sparks, Nev., to see Dead & Company perform later Saturday night at the Sphere. “Maybe they'll play one of my favorite songs: 'Cold Rain and Snow.'”

In Sacramento, firefighter paramedic Julie Whitney was on high alert.

“People are feeling dizzy, feeling nauseous. A lot of these symptoms just make them feel very weak,” Whitney said, adding that heat-related illnesses can occur within 15 minutes.

The worst is yet to come across much of the West, with triple-digit temperatures likely — 15 to 30 degrees above average — next week, the National Weather Service said.

As of 10:30 a.m. Saturday, the National Weather Service said the temperature had already reached 100 degrees in Phoenix, which set a record high of 118 F for Friday.

Meteorologists predict temperatures will be near daily records across the region for most, if not all, of the coming week, with highs in the desert reaching 115 to 120 degrees.

Forecasters say California is expected to see some of the worst effects of the heat wave on Saturday, with temperatures likely to reach 110 degrees.

Rare heat advisories have been extended even to higher elevations, including around Lake Tahoe, California, and the National Weather Service in Reno, Nevada, warned of “major heat risk impacts, even in the mountains.”

In Death Valley, California, known for being one of the hottest places on the planet, a new heat record was set Friday. The previous record was broken by 5 degrees, with the mercury climbing to 127 degrees. The previous record of 122 degrees was last matched in 2013.

Palm Springs, California, hit 124 degrees on Friday, breaking the city's all-time high of 123 degrees.

California firefighters have sent planes and helicopters to drop water or retardant on a series of wildfires across the state. In Santa Barbara County, northwest of Los Angeles, the so-called Lake Fire burned more than 20 square miles of grass, brush and timber with no way to contain it as of Saturday afternoon. Firefighters said the blaze was exhibiting “extreme fire behavior” and had “the potential for significant growth” with high temperatures and low humidity.

About 40 miles northeast of Sacramento, a wildfire broke out Saturday near the city of Placerville, forcing mandatory evacuations, according to CBS Sacramento. The so-called Pay Fire threatened the Placerville airport and had burned at least 61 acres unchecked as of Saturday night.

The Thompson wildfire ripped through the Butte region of Northern California this week, forcing thousands of people to flee their homes. Evacuation orders were downgraded to warnings Thursday. As of Saturday, the fire was 71 percent contained, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

Over the weekend, excessive heat and humidity will move eastward toward the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast, with temperatures expected to reach the 90s and 100s.

Baltimore and other areas of Maryland are under an excessive heat warning as heat index values could climb to 110 degrees, forecasters said.

“Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, avoid the sun, and check on your family and neighbors,” the National Weather Service in the Baltimore area said. “Small children and pets should never be left unattended in a vehicle.”

The National Weather Service urged people to remain vigilant, stressing that the effects of heat can worsen over time and pose a threat to health and safety. Above-average temperatures are expected to persist through next week, forecasters said.

“It is imperative to stay hydrated, out of direct sunlight, and in adequately air-conditioned buildings when possible,” the weather service said. “It is also equally important to check on the safety of vulnerable friends, family, and neighbors.”

California Gov. Gavin Newsom's office said earlier this week that the state is taking steps to ensure the most vulnerable Californians have access to resources, including cooling centers.

Heat-related deaths have been on the rise in recent years. In 2023, an estimated 2,300 deaths were linked to excessive heat, breaking previous records, according to an AP analysis. In Arizona’s Maricopa County, which includes Phoenix, there have been at least 13 confirmed heat-related deaths this year, and more than 160 other suspected heat-related deaths remain under investigation, according to the county’s latest report.

That doesn't include the death of a 10-year-old boy earlier this week in Phoenix who suffered a “heat-related medical event” while hiking with his family at South Mountain Park and Preserve, police said.

Just this week, the Biden administration proposed a new rule aimed at protecting workers from the effects of extreme heat.
