Education Minister Begins Recruiting 6,500 New Teachers

The Education Minister today (Monday 8 July) set out to deliver on the government's pledge to recruit 6,500 new teachers.

Bridget Phillipson will set about resetting the relationship between government and the education sector and changing the image of teachers as a key element in government recruiting new teachers and retaining those already in the classroom.

As a first step after taking office, the Minister of Education will write to every educator today to make clear the important role they will play in this government’s agenda for change.

The Education Secretary is due to hold a reception with key education stakeholders later this week and will prioritise meeting with teachers' unions in the coming days.

The Department for Education will also immediately restart and expand its flagship teacher recruitment campaign, Every Lesson Shapes a Life, and will also restart its supplementary teacher recruitment campaign, Share Your Skills.

Today’s announcement demonstrates the Government’s intention to re-establish the teaching profession as an attractive and professional one, one that truly values ​​the immeasurable impact teachers can have on children’s lives.

From day one, we are delivering the change this country needs and putting education back at the forefront of our national life. We will recruit thousands of outstanding new teachers and work urgently to reset the relationship between government and the education workforce.

For too long the teaching profession has been denigrated, marginalized, and degraded. I made it a priority to write to the people at the center of change today: our workforce.

I want every child to have the best chance at life, and recruiting and retaining great teachers in our classrooms today is the first step toward that mission.
