For the first time, more than 3 million people pass through US airport security in a single day

More than 3 million people passed through U.S. airport security on Sunday, the first time that many passengers were screened in a single day as travel surges, according to the U.S. Transportation Security Administration.

The record, which was set to occur over the July 4 holiday weekend, surpassed the record set on June 23, when more than 2.99 million passengers were screened. Eight of the 10 busiest days in TSA history have occurred this year, with the number of travelers surpassing pre-pandemic levels.

The TSA was created after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and replaced a collection of private security firms hired by airlines. The agency reports to the Department of Homeland Security, which said agents were screening 35 passengers per second Sunday.

As Americans continue to battle inflation, travel costs, including airfare and hotel prices, have fallen significantly from last year. Hotel rooms were 1.2% cheaper in May than last year, according to recent government inflation data. Those costs have been falling since the beginning of the year.

While most U.S. airlines lost money in the first quarter, traditionally the weakest time of year for travel, they all expected a summer with full planes.

In the spring, American and Southwest Airlines said they expected strong second-quarter profits. They joined Delta Air Lines and United Airlines in announcing upbeat outlooks for the April-June period, which includes the start of the carriers' peak season.

Delta Airlines reported second-quarter earnings Thursday, with analysts expecting revenue of $15.5 billion, nearly $1 billion more than the same period last year. Next week, United and American Airlines will report quarterly results, with Wall Street predicting both airlines will post higher revenue than last year.

Planes have been increasingly crowded since the pandemic shut down travel four years ago, leading to a number of drawbacks for airlines: complaints.

The Department of Transportation said last week it received nearly 97,000 complaints in 2023, up from about 86,000 the previous year. The department said there were so many complaints that it took until July to sort through the files and compile the numbers.

It is the highest number of complaints against airlines since 2020, when they were slow to refund customers after the coronavirus pandemic shut down air travel.

The Department of Transportation said the increase in complaints was partly due to more travelers knowing their rights and having the ability to file a complaint. Airlines are receiving many more complaints from travelers who don't know how or don't bother to complain to the government, but carriers don't disclose those numbers.

Associated Press Airlines reporter David Koenig contributed to this report.
