Welsh is the most comfortable accent in Britain, study finds | UK News

A study has revealed that the British accent is the most comfortable.

The survey asked 1,502 nationals to rank 15 British accents from most comfortable to least comfortable.

The Welsh accent came in first place, while the Essex accent came in 15th place.

Yorkshire and Cornish shared second place, while Northern Irish and the Partial Pronunciation (RP) accent rounded out the top five.

The study was conducted by Spa Seekers in collaboration with experts from the University of Sheffield.

Dr Chris Montgomery, who teaches dialectology at the university, told Sky News that “no accent is inherently comfortable”.

“People come to realize what those meanings mean over time,” he said.

“With a Welsh accent, people will probably go to Wales. They might go on holiday. They come to Wales for the countryside and they associate it with being in that place, going to the beach, maybe being in Snowdonia or one of the other national parks.”

Survey respondents were given several accent “labels” to choose from.

“Basically what you have is a bunch of different accent labels and a bunch of different scales, and people rate themselves on those scales, and then we look at how they rank,” Dr. Montgomery explained.

However, the list of accents included in this study is not comprehensive, as there are differences even within countries and regions of the UK.

“We just used the label ‘Welsh accent’, obviously there are a lot of differences in Wales,” Dr Montgomery added.

“People say that in Wales the north and the south are very important in terms of the Welsh language and Welsh English.

“But there will be differences from city to city. So we just used that one label, and it was really just for convenience.”

According to this survey, Italian has the most comfortable accent in the world.
