Keegan Bradley named USA captain for 2025 Ryder Cup

Keegan Bradley will be part of a new Ryder Cup team, this time as captain of the United States. The PGA of America announced his selection Monday after months of talks with Tiger Woods about taking the job.

The PGA of America posted the news on Instagram after rumors began to leak earlier in the day that Bradley, who has played on only two Ryder Cup teams and never served as an assistant captain, had been selected to officiate the 2025 matches at Bethpage Black in New York.

Bradley was already in New York for media training. A news conference to introduce him is scheduled for noon Tuesday at the NASDAQ building. At 38, he will be the youngest U.S. captain since Arnold Palmer was a player-captain in 1963 at East Lake.

Sports Illustrated was the first to report that Bradley would be the next captain.

Woods was the Ryder Cup committee's first choice and had been negotiating for months over what the job would entail and whether he would have the time to fulfill its duties, many of which involve promoting the event.

Although he is playing only a limited schedule, Woods is vice chairman of the commercial board of PGA Tour Enterprises as it tries to secure an investment deal with the Saudi backers of rival LIV Golf.

He was player-captain for the 2019 Presidents Cup when the Americans won at Royal Melbourne, and he was assistant captain for the Ryder Cup at Hazeltine in 2016.

“I put a lot of time into what we do with the PGA Tour. I don't want to not be in my role as captain if I can't do it,” Woods said in May at the PGA Championship.

With Woods no longer an option, the PGA of America opted for a local touch with Bradley. He is a New England native who played college golf at St. John's.

“Keegan’s Ryder Cup experience, strong relationships and unwavering passion for the event will prove invaluable to him as he leads Team USA over the next 18 months,” said John Lindert, chairman of the PGA of America. “We are confident that with Keegan at the helm, the 2025 U.S. Ryder Cup Team will enter Bethpage with the same confidence and determination that defined his career.”

Bradley has six PGA Tour victories, including the 2011 PGA Championship. Two of those victories came last season, and Bradley thought that might be enough to get him on another Ryder Cup team. He was devastated when U.S. captain Zach Johnson passed him over with his six captain's picks, selecting Rickie Fowler, Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth, Brooks Koepka, Collin Morikawa and Sam Burns.

The prototype Ryder Cup captain is usually a player not yet at the peak of his career, usually in his 40s. And since players were given a say in choosing captains after the 2014 matches, the pattern has been for future captains to serve first as assistants in the Ryder Cup or Presidents Cup.

The model also predicts that the former captain, Johnson in this case, will be an assistant at the next Ryder Cup. With so much original thinking about Bradley's selection, it wasn't immediately clear whether that still holds true.

Bradley last played in the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles in Scotland in 2014, when Tom Watson benched him and Phil Mickelson for both Saturday sessions in another European victory.

Bradley made his Ryder Cup debut at Medinah in 2012, teaming with Mickelson for a 3-0 win before losing to Rory McIlroy in singles play in what turned out to be a European victory, the biggest comeback by a visiting team.

He didn't unpack his bag from 2012 games and said he wouldn't open it until he was on a winning team. Now he might get that chance.

I look forward to starting preparations for 2025.”

This is the last time the Americans have chosen a captain in more than 30 years. It should never have taken this long or been this complicated.

Mickelson was the logical choice for this Ryder Cup since Bethpage Black was announced as the host venue in 2013. New York loves Lefty, and he was the sentimental favorite during two U.S. Open finalists at Bethpage Black.

But he became head scout for LIV Golf and joined the Saudi league in 2022, falling out of favor with several PGA Tour players because of his promotion of the rival circuit. Then Woods took over, and it didn't work out after months of talks.

Luke Donald had just 14 months to prepare for the 2023 games outside of Rome when he was chosen to lead Europe after Henrik Stenson joined LIV and lost the captaincy. Europe won handily and Donald was chosen to lead Europe again at Bethpage Black.
