Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu to visit US: What to know about the visit and protests | Israeli-Palestinian Conflict News

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is visiting the United States this week and is expected to address a joint session of Congress on Wednesday.
Here's what we know about the visit.
Where and at what time is Netanyahu expected to arrive?
The Israeli prime minister is expected to arrive in Washington on Monday. Although the exact time is not yet known, he is expected to meet with US President Joe Biden on Thursday, according to US officials.
He will be the first foreign leader to meet Biden since the US president announced on Sunday that he would not seek re-election in November. He is also expected to meet US Vice President Kamala Harris during his trip, but the date has not yet been announced.
Netanyahu is scheduled to address the US Congress on Wednesday. He is reportedly scheduled to speak at 2pm (1800 GMT). It would be his fourth speech to the US Congress, a record for a US leader. Former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill addressed Congress three times.
Biden has been a staunch supporter of Israel throughout his political career. He has offered what he has described as unwavering assistance to Israel during its war on Gaza, despite growing criticism. Yet Republicans have accused him of not supporting Israel as fully as they would have.
In his letter to Netanyahu inviting him to Congress, House Speaker Mike Johnson said the Israeli prime minister would have a platform to share his government's vision for defending democracy, fighting terrorism and establishing a just and lasting peace in the region.

What is the agenda for US-Israel relations?
Netanyahu's trip comes as the United States is in political turmoil following Biden's withdrawal from the presidential race.
Before boarding the plane on Monday, Netanyahu said he would emphasize the theme of Israel's bipartisanship in his speech and said Israel would remain a key U.S. ally in the Middle East, regardless of who the American people choose as their next president.
In this time of war and uncertainty, it is important for Israel’s enemies to know that America and Israel stand together. Today, tomorrow and always, he said, adding that he would meet with Biden during his trip and thank him for his support for Israel.
As I left for the United States, I thanked President Biden for the many things he did for the State of Israel during the war and his years as President, Vice President and Senator.
I look forward to my important meeting with the President.

Analysts say Netanyahu will deliver his speech to Congress with multiple audiences in mind: his ultranationalist partners in power, key to his political survival; the Biden administration, on which Netanyahu relies for diplomatic and military support; and former President Donald Trump’s Republican Party, which could offer Netanyahu a reset in relations if Trump is reelected in November.
It won’t be easy to avoid upsetting any of them, suggested Eytan Gilboa, an expert on U.S.-Israel relations at Israel’s Bar-Ilan University, speaking before Biden’s withdrawal. The trip has some pitfalls and pitfalls, Gilboa said.
Netanyahu is expected to focus on coordinating the Israeli and American response to the volatile situation in the Middle East, where there is a growing danger that the Gaza war will spill over into a broader regional conflict.

In Israel, Netanyahu faces growing calls for a deal that would end the fighting in Gaza and allow the return of the 120 living and dead hostages still held in the enclave run by the Palestinian militant group Hamas.
Israel also faces growing global criticism over its war in Gaza, in which more than 39,000 people have been killed, as well as the expansion of Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank and settler attacks on Palestinians.
Friday's ruling by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) that Israel's occupation of Palestinian territory is illegal has been criticized by Washington. But it follows similar developments, including a decision by the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court to seek an arrest warrant for Netanyahu.
And while the U.S. government and Congress support Israel, American public support for the war on Gaza has waned since October 7, when Hamas fighters attacked Israel.
Are there any protests planned in the United States?
Activists opposed to Israel's war in Gaza and Washington's support for its Middle Eastern ally plan to protest at the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday.
At 11:00 a.m. (1500 GMT), thousands of protesters are expected to gather at 3rd Street NW and Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington DC to demand Netanyahu's arrest for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity. The protesters will march around the perimeter of the US Capitol, carrying a red banner symbolizing a red line against the war in Gaza.
A coalition of groups is expected to participate in the protests, including ANSWER (an acronym for Act Now to Stop War and End Racism), the women's peace and human rights group CodePink, and pro-Palestinian groups such as the Palestinian American Community Center and Jewish groups including Jewish Voice for Peace.
CodePink told Reuters that organizers had arranged buses for human rights activists to come to Washington from many states across the country.

About 230 anonymous Capitol Hill employees from 122 offices signed a letter, made public last week, urging their bosses to protest or boycott Netanyahu's July 24 speech to Congress.
Meanwhile, UnXeptable, a grassroots movement of Israeli citizens around the world, will hold a rally in Upper Senate Park in Washington to protest Netanyahu.
At 1 p.m. (5 p.m. GMT), a Peace and Justice bloc of Palestinians, Israelis, Jews, Arabs and their allies will gather near the U.S. Capitol to call for a ceasefire, an agreement to release captives and an end to the occupation.

Who else will Netanyahu meet during his visit?
Netanyahu is expected to attend a memorial service for Sen. Joe Lieberman, who died in March.
It is not yet clear whether Netanyahu will meet Trump during the trip.
