The Americans had a tough task against the reigning world champions in Great Britain. After qualifying with the second fastest time, the Americans rose to the challenge and crossed the finish line first with a time of 4:04.629, a national record.

Great Britain took the lead from the 250m mark, with the USA just a tenth of a second behind. By 625m, the Americans responded and took the lead. Kristen Faulkner helped increase the Americans' lead to two-tenths of a second by 1250m. The USA slowly increased their lead, by 2000m they were three-tenths of a second ahead; however, Great Britain closed the gap to one-tenth of a second 500m later.

Once both teams were down to three riders, the U.S. really finished strong. As the bell rang for the final lap, the Americans held on to their 0.1-second lead. There was some concern when Lily Williams lost contact at the back, but she held on and the Americans finished first, 0.279 seconds ahead of Great Britain for the win. Jennifer Valente and Chloe Dygert joined Faulkner and Williams as the other two members of the team to post the fastest time of the heat. Great Britain finished with the third-fastest time in the bronze medal race.
