US accuses Chinese dissident of spying for Beijing

U.S. prosecutors have filed criminal charges against a Chinese dissident living in the United States, accusing him of being an agent of Beijing's intelligence services.

Yuanjun Tang, 67, was arrested in New York on Wednesday, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) said in a statement.

He is accused of spying on Chinese pro-democracy activists and dissidents based in the United States.

Mr. Tang, now a naturalized U.S. citizen, is also accused of making false statements to the FBI.

The BBC could not immediately identify Mr Tang's lawyer.

In a statement released Wednesday, the Justice Department said Mr. Tang “has been charged by criminal complaint with acting and conspiring to act in the United States as an unregistered agent of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and making false statements to the FBI.”

He also alleged that between 2018 and 2023, he acted as an agent of China on the orders of the country's Ministry of State Security (MSS) – China's main civilian intelligence agency.

Mr. Tang is accused of regularly receiving instructions via email, encrypted chats and other means of communication from the agency.

He also allegedly “regularly received instructions from and reported to an MSS intelligence officer regarding individuals and groups considered by the PRC to be potentially contrary to PRC interests, including prominent Chinese democracy activists and dissidents based in the United States.”

“He also traveled at least three times for face-to-face meetings with MSS intelligence officers and helped the MSS infiltrate a chatroom on an encrypted messaging application used by many PRC dissidents and pro-democracy activists to communicate about pro-democracy issues and express criticism of the PRC government,” the DOJ alleges.

He allegedly agreed to work for Chinese intelligence in order to have his family live in mainland China, according to CBS, the BBC's US news partner, citing US prosecutors.

According to court documents, Mr. Tang was imprisoned in China for opposing the Chinese government.

He protested against the Chinese Communist Party during the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989, CBS reports.

Around 2002, he successfully defected to Taiwan and was later granted political asylum in the United States, the Justice Department said.
