Serena Williams heads to US Open for first time since last match

NEW YORK – Welcome to the U.S. Open, Serena Williams.

Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam singles champion, returned to Flushing Meadows on Saturday – but she was watching tennis, not playing it.

And she brought back an old look, wearing a denim skirt similar to the one she wore during the competition in New York in 2004.

This was Williams' first visit to the US Open since 2022, when she played the final tournament of her career there. She reached the third round before losing to Ajla Tomljanovic in her final match, though Williams stopped short of saying she was retiring, instead describing it as an “evolution” away from professional tennis.

Since then, she has been busy, pursuing her business interests, signing a book deal, releasing a documentary series currently airing on ESPN and, in July, hosting the ESPYS. Williams gave birth to her second daughter a year ago.

The 42-year-old American has won six US Open singles titles – tied with Chris Evert for the record – during her decades of dominance with a racquet in her hands. This time, Williams was sitting in a suite at Arthur Ashe Stadium as world No. 1 Jannik Sinner cruised to a three-set third-round victory over Christopher O'Connell.

Williams circled the court, watching American Tommy Paul win at Louis Armstrong Stadium and stopping at one point in the players' gym to chat with current women's No. 1 Iga Swiatek ahead of her third-round night match against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

One of Williams' good friends, 2018 Australian Open champion and former No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki, joked after winning Saturday to reach the fourth round that she was disappointed not to have spotted Williams in the spectator seats in the grandstand.

“I’m going to send her a message,” Wozniacki said with a laugh. “I’m pretty mad at her because she didn’t come to my game. I guess we’ll have to talk about that a little bit later.”
