Met Office issues emergency warning of tropical flooding in UK

A disruption in the jet stream could create a truncated appendage that rotates around the UK, threatening tropical flooding.

The weather in the UK is going crazy, with some areas experiencing their hottest temperatures in five months, while others are set to see up to four inches (10 cm) of rain.

Aidan McGivern, a meteorologist at the Met Office in the UK, said: The jet stream is very elongated and extends southwards across the UK, but it can split off from the main stream and form a completely separate circulation known as a blocking low.

Heavy rain is expected to continue across southern England until Monday, bringing heavy rainfall to parts of the country, which is a major concern over the next few days.

It all depends on the instability in northern France and how the thunderstorms and heavy rain develop there, which can be very uncertain.

Temperatures are expected to rise into the mid-20s on Friday as warm air sweeps across the UK coast and moves towards Scotland and the north.

Up to four inches of rain is expected to fall across southern England and the West Country this weekend.

McGivern added: “The low pressure over France and the low pressure on the ground will create unstable conditions and high humidity in the air, which will bring heavy rain.

“The first half of the month will be a mix of warm, very warm, wet and stormy, with the weather starting calm and quiet and then turning wet and unsettled,” said Jim Dale, a meteorologist and social commentator at the Met Office in the UK.

Some areas are expected to experience prolonged dry weather, while others are expected to see more rain.
