Sabalenka beats Pegula in US Open final to win third Grand Slam title

No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka won her third Grand Slam singles title on Saturday, and her first in New York, beating No. 6 Jessica Pegula 7-5, 7-5 to claim the 2024 US Open title.

Under the closed roof of Arthur Ashe Stadium on a rainy day, Sabalenka beat American hopeful Pegula in 1 hour and 53 minutes.

“It’s also a very special place, the US Open,” Sabalenka said in her post-match press conference. “I’ve also had many tough losses in the past. I always hoped that one day I could hold this beautiful trophy. It’s always been my dream.”

Sabalenka led by a set and 3-0 before Pegula went on a five-game run and served for the second set at 5-4. Sabalenka weathered that storm to prevail and claim the three-set victory.

Sabalenka, 26, dropped just one set en route to the title, against No. 29 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova in the third round.

Sabalenka goes further than last year, exorcising some demons along the way. She had already led by a set in last year's final before finishing second behind another great American, Coco Gauff.

Hard court confidence: Sabalenka has now established herself as the current queen of hard court Grand Slam tournaments. She has a near-perfect 27-1 record in the last four Grand Slam tournaments on the surface, having also won the Australian Open last year and this year.

In a duel between the two best hard-court players of the summer, it was Sabalenka who repeated her victory over Pegula in the Cincinnati final three weeks ago. By consolidating that title with a triumph in New York, Sabalenka is on a 12-game winning streak.

Sabalenka becomes the first player to win two hard-court Grand Slams in the same year since Angelique Kerber in 2016. The only other women to win a pair of hard-court Grand Slams in the same calendar year during the Open era are Stefanie Graf (1988, 1989), Monica Seles (1991, 1992) and Martina Hingis (1997).

Match Summary: In Saturday's first set, both opponents dominated play on second serve returns, and Sabalenka failed to serve out the first set at 5-4. Sabalenka ended a potential Pegula lead by winning with 14 points for a 6-5 score, fending off a break point in that game with a deep backhand winner.

Pegula then led four set points and had a set point after a powerful serve. Sabalenka, however, found a volley winner at the end of a powerful rally to get back to level, and she had a fifth set point after a double fault from Pegula. There, Sabalenka found the backhand angle to win the dramatic first set.

Despite trailing 3-0 in the second set, Pegula didn't stop rallying and won the next five games. She served for the second set at 5-4, but never got to the set point, and Sabalenka smashed a backhand winner down the sideline to keep the tie at 5-5.

Sabalenka kept her cool and dictated her forehand on her second match point to break Pegula and win the title, collapsing on the court in joy. Sabalenka's aggressive play helped her overcome the difficult task. She had 40 winners to Pegula's 17, and the winner won 18 of 23 points (78 percent) when she stepped to the net.
