The U.S. State Department on Monday urged Israel to promptly investigate the death of an American woman during a protest against Israeli settlements in the West Bank last week. Witnesses said she was shot in the head by Israeli forces monitoring the protest. Israeli authorities said they were investigating the incident.
Aysenur Eygi, 26, was killed last Friday while participating in a protest organized by a pro-Palestinian activist organization called the International Solidarity Movement (ISM). For the past two months, ISM volunteers and other international activists have been protesting a settlement called Evyatar, which was originally an unauthorized offshoot of the older Beita settlement.
While the international community considers all Jewish settlements in the Israeli-occupied West Bank to be a violation of international law, such unauthorized outposts are illegal even under Israeli law. But in July, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, himself an ultranationalist settler, legalized Evyatar and several other outposts.
U.S. State Department spokesman Vedant Patel told reporters Monday that Israel had promised to share its findings with the United States first. “We hope that will happen as quickly as possible. We hope that this process will be thorough and transparent,” Patel said.
That likely won't be enough to satisfy the Eygis family, who are calling on the Biden administration to push for an independent investigation into the killing “to ensure full accountability for those responsible,” according to the family's statement Friday.
Witnesses say Israeli forces fired on Aysenur Eygi
Eygi, who has dual U.S. and Turkish citizenship, recently graduated from the University of Washington in Seattle and traveled to the West Bank to demonstrate in solidarity with the Palestinians. Palestinians are protesting the expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank, a process they say has intensified since the Palestinian militant group Hamas attacked Israel last October. The attack in Israel killed 1,200 people, according to Israel. In response, Israel’s military campaign in Gaza has killed nearly 41,000 people, according to Palestinian health officials.
Eygi had arrived in Israel just two days before she was killed and had joined prayers with local Palestinians atop a hill overlooking the Evyatar outpost before the protest began, ISM activists told NPR.
Vivi Chen, an activist at the scene, said the Israeli army arrived just after the prayers.
They pushed us down the hill. The army, at that point, had fired tear gas. They had fired a few live rounds, she said.
Witnesses said there were clashes and rocks being thrown. Activist Jay Harrison hid behind a dumpster and started running when a gunshot hit his cover. He said that’s when he heard another gunshot about 5 meters away. “I saw someone collapse and fall backward,” he said. He realized it was Eygi. He ran to check his pulse, but he was very weak.
I could see blood coming from his nose. His eyes weren't completely closed. You could see his eyes rolling back, he said.
A doctor said she had stopped breathing when she arrived at the hospital
An ambulance took Eygi to Rafidia Hospital in Nablus, the main city in the northern West Bank, where she was quickly pronounced dead. The hospital’s director, Dr. Fouad Nafaa, said she arrived with dilated and fixed pupils and no heartbeat. She was not breathing and parts of her brain had escaped. He said doctors performed six rounds of cardiopulmonary resuscitation but were unable to save her.
The Israeli military said in a statement that troops fired at a “main instigator” who was throwing stones at them.
But Harrison disputed that claim. He said there was no way anyone could have hit them with rocks.
Chen, the other activist present that day, said it was a deliberate shooting. “It’s not like hundreds of bullets were flying through the air and she was hit by accident,” Chen said. “She was just walking down the hill and then she found herself standing next to an olive tree.”
Israeli military raids and settler violence have increased since October 7, including a major military raid on Jenin and two other towns in the northern occupied West Bank in recent weeks. In total, these attacks have killed more than 650 Palestinians, according to the United Nations.
The ISM claims that at least three of its activists have been killed since 2000. American ISM activist Rachel Corrie was crushed to death by an Israeli military bulldozer in Gaza in 2003.
Palestinians hold procession
Eygis' death was met with shock and grief at the University of Washington.
“I’m completely devastated. The whole community is,” Aria Fani, Eygi’s former translation teacher, told the Seattle Times. He described Eygi as one of the brightest students he ever taught.
The Associated Press reported that the Palestinian Authority held a funeral procession for Eygi in the West Bank city of Nablus on Monday, but Turkey wants the body to be transferred there for burial.
Hadeel Al-Shalchi reported from Tel Aviv, Israel. Michele Kelemen and James Hider reported from Washington, DC.
