UK lawyer for Israel supporter resigns, slams Starmer for right to stop arms exports
An influential supporter of a pro-Israel legal advocacy group seeking to challenge the British government's decision to halt some arms exports to Israel has resigned from the group after saying he supported a partial ban.
Lord Carlyle, an independent peer in the House of Lords, told Middle East Eye on Monday that he had resigned as patron of the British Israel Bar Association, but gave no further comment.
Writing on the Independent website on Monday, Lord Carlyle said Prime Minister Keir Starmer's government was right to suspend 30 export licences.
Carlyle also accused former Foreign Secretary David Cameron of following the same legal advice that his successor David Lammy has been relying on since February.
There is no justification for seeking clear legal advice for more than a very short period of time. Starmer has shown courage and conviction in making the decision to do the right thing, no matter how difficult it may be.

Carlyles's opinion was published on the same day that the British Lawyers for Israel (UKLFI) wrote to the government warning it would take legal action if the decision to suspend arms licences was not overturned.
UKLFI said it would seek a judicial review of the decision, questioning the basis for the assessment that Israel had not done enough to facilitate humanitarian access to Gaza during its war with Hamas and the allegations of abuse of Palestinian prisoners.
“We believe there is strong evidence that the government's decision was unlawful,” said Jonathan Turner, chief executive of UKLFI.
In fact, it was a political decision to appease the public who hate Israel based on misinformation and biased media coverage of the war. It was therefore an abuse of the power granted by the legislation.
UKLFI describes itself as an association of lawyers who support Israel and seek the proper application of the law in matters relating to Israel.
A copy of the letter, which was posted on the UKLFIs website and sent to the government on Friday, lists Sir Charles as one of the group's patrons in the footer of the front page.
But Carlyle, writing on Monday, expressed disappointment with the arms embargo, which some critics, including Britain's Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, former Prime Minister Boris Johnson and several lawyers, say undermines the rule of law.
In response to the arms embargo on social media last Monday, Mirvis said: It is hard to believe that the British government, a close strategic ally of Israel, would announce that it would suspend some arms licenses at a time when Israel is fighting a war for its survival.
He added that the ban further fueled false claims that Israel was violating international humanitarian law.

But Khalil pointed out that the British government's decision to ban some arms exports was a deliberate one, following similar decisions by courts and governments in Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain and Canada.
He wrote: The principle of preventing abuse of state power and of the rule of law applicable to all should not be violently ignored by those who act according to prejudice.
He added: “Those of us who hold these views have felt the sting of contempt and disparagement for holding them, even from some of our most respected political colleagues. For a Jew to criticize another Jew for holding these views is to undermine the very freedom for which our ancestors died under the yoke of the most horrible tyranny.”
When contacted for comment, the British Israel Bar Association referred MEE to its previous statement on the legal challenge to the British government. Lord Carlisle’s profile appeared to have been removed from the UKLFI website on Monday afternoon.
The UK government is facing legal action from the Global Legal Action Network and campaign group Al-Haq over its policy of exporting weapons to Israel, which argue that the current suspension of 350 licenses is not enough and that the use of British components in Israel’s F-35 fighter jets should also be included.
Jonathan Purcell, a spokesman for the International Centre for Justice in Palestine (ICJP), a legal advocacy group for Palestinian human rights, told MEE: “UKLFI’s position on the legality of arms sales is so outrageous that they seem unable to convince even their own donors.
“There is only one legal action against UK arms sales, and that is the ICJP-backed legal action led by Glan and Al-Haq, which calls for a total and immediate ban on arms sales.”
Israel and its leaders are currently being prosecuted by the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court for genocide and war crimes in connection with the deaths of more than 40,000 Palestinians in the war in the Gaza Strip.
