UK expands digital tourism to attract more visitors

The Government is taking a significant step towards achieving its ambitious goal of digitising the UK’s borders and immigration system and has today revealed a new implementation date for the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme.

Anyone wishing to travel to the UK, other than British and Irish citizens, must obtain travel authorisation before coming here. This can be done via an ETA or eVisa.

Today we can confirm that eligible non-Europeans will be able to apply for an ETA from 27 November 2024, and will need an ETA for travel from 8 January 2025. The ETA will be extended to eligible Europeans from 5 March 2025, and will need an ETA for travel from 2 April 2025.

The ETA is digitally linked to a traveler’s passport and helps prevent abuse of the immigration system by providing stronger security checks before people begin their journey to the UK. An ETA costs $10 and allows multiple trips to the UK for up to six months at a time over a two-year period or until the holder’s passport expires.

From today, information about ETA eligibility is available on GOV.UK. Anyone who needs to apply for an ETA can do so quickly and easily using the UK ETA app.

Visitors to the Gulf Cooperation Council will need an ETA to travel to the UK.

The introduction of ETA is consistent with the approach taken by many other countries to border security, including the United States and Australia.

Minister of Immigration and Citizenship, Seema Malhotra, said:

Digitalisation has enabled seamless travel for the millions of people who cross our borders each year, including visitors who are expected to contribute more than £32 billion to the UK tourism economy this year.

ETA’s global expansion demonstrates our commitment to strengthening security and modernizing immigration systems through new technologies.

People who need a UK visa to live, work or study in the UK will now be issued with an eVisa, which is a digital proof of their immigration status instead of a physical immigration document that can be lost, stolen or altered. The eVisa streamlines the experience by eliminating the need for people to wait or travel to receive a physical document.

The UK Government is currently urging UK immigrants who are using physical immigration documents, including a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP), or a passport with an ink stamp or visa vignette sticker, to take action now and create an online account to access their eVisa.

Most BRPs are scheduled to expire on December 31, 2024, and BRP holders are encouraged to take action before their BRPs expire.

By creating an account, people can use the online service to prove their rights and manage data such as personal and passport information, without affecting their basic immigration status. Additional support is provided to vulnerable groups who need to take steps to move from physical documents to eVisas through government funding.

The government is working closely with global airlines, shipping lines and rail carriers, who are playing a key role in ensuring a smooth implementation of the digitalisation programme.
