The United States may allow Ukraine to fire British and French missiles at Russia, but not its own long-range weapons, according to two sources familiar with the talks between Kiev, Britain and the United States.

President Biden is set to authorize Ukrainian President Zelensky to use Storm Shadow missiles and French Scalp missiles to strike deeper into the Russian mainland, sources said.

But the United States will prohibit Ukraine's military from deploying its longest-range missiles across its border.

Earlier, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken hinted privately that a decision had already been made.

Kiev has asked the West for permission to use long-range weapons, a request that has become more urgent after recent reports that Russia has acquired ballistic missiles from Iran. But Western leaders have been slow to respond to Ukraine’s request, fearing that granting it could lead to a wider war.

The TASS state news agency reported that the Kremlin said Moscow would react if Ukraine were to allow Western weapons to be used.

More than a month after Kiev's military stunned Vladimir Putin and seized vast swathes of Russian territory, Russian forces are fighting back against the Kursk invasion of Ukraine.

A Russian missile hit a civilian ship carrying grain from Ukraine, but the ship had already left Ukrainian waters and was in the Black Sea.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiha condemned the strikes as a blatant attack on freedom of navigation and global food security.

President Zelensky said the ship was heading to Egypt but there were no casualties.

In a social media post, he said it was vital for Ukraine to supply food to African and Middle Eastern countries.

We will continue to do everything we can to protect our ports, the Black Sea, and food exports to world markets. Wheat and food security should never be a target for missiles.

Industry sources told Reuters the grain carrier collided last night in Romanian waters near the mouth of the Danube River in the Black Sea.

1726145717New evacuation order for Pokrovsk

Russian forces are expanding their presence in parts of eastern Ukraine, including Pokrovsk, the fall of which would open up a new line of attack for Moscow and complicate logistics in eastern Ukraine.

The governor of the Donetsk region said that heavy fighting had disrupted the operation of water treatment plants, disrupting water supplies to Pokrovsk.

He again urged civilians to evacuate the town, saying it would be impossible to restore it in the near future.

The situation is difficult and will not improve soon. That is why I once again call for evacuation! This is what Vadim Filashkin, a civil servant, wrote in a statement posted on the Telegram messaging app.

1726142537 Zelensky, China denounces Brazil, calls for peace in Ukraine

President Volodymyr Zelensky has dismissed the China-Brazil peace initiative for the Ukraine war as destructive, complaining that Kiev is not involved in the process.

China and Brazil called for an international peace conference in May, recognized by both Russia and Ukraine, which they said should involve equal participation by all parties and include fair discussions on all peace plans.

President Zelensky said the Chinese-Brazilian proposal was destructive and merely a political statement.

How can you give us your initiative without asking anything of us?

According to a video posted by Metropol, President Zelensky said the initiative lacked respect for Ukraine and its territorial integrity, and that Russian President Vladimir Putin should take steps to demonstrate his will to end the war.

1726138917Reduction in Russian sabotage activities on Ukraine border

Andriy Demchenko, a spokesman for the Ukrainian State Border Guard, told state TV that Russian sabotage along the border had decreased in recent weeks.

He said: Recently, especially in the Sumy region, the activity of enemy sabotage and reconnaissance groups has significantly decreased. The enemy has not abandoned sabotage activities, and this can be seen in the Sumy and Chernihiv regions, where they are trying to penetrate into our territory, planting mines in some directions, hoping that Ukrainian soldiers will fall into such traps.

However, Demchenko said all components of the defense forces were acting together to expose such enemy actions in a timely manner.

1726138555Ukrainian scholar thanks charity for helping him escape war zone

A Ukrainian academic has thanked a charity for helping him move to Britain, saying threats against academics are the worst they have been globally since the rise of Nazi Germany.

Academics are often targeted by authoritarian governments and extremist groups who see free thought and expression as a threat.

The charity Kara, which has been operating for nearly a century, supports scholars fleeing violence, oppression, and threats to their intellectual and personal freedom.

The anonymous scholar thanked Kara for providing him with a safe haven in the UK. He said: The first days of the full-scale invasion of my homeland, Ukraine, were the most traumatic days of my life. Like many citizens of Kiev, I spent the nights in bunkers, the days trying to find meager food, and periodically hiding in the subway during air raids.

Of course, the institute where I worked as a cancer researcher stopped all work. That's when I realized how important and valuable Kara was. I am forever grateful to everyone who ensured my safety and gave me the opportunity to continue the research I always loved.

The long-established charity has received more than 2,000 requests for help over the past three academic years from at-risk academics seeking urgent temporary refuge in the UK amid escalating fighting in Ukraine and the Gaza Strip.

That's a 400 per cent increase in demand compared to the previous three years and the highest level the charity has recorded since it was founded in the 1930s to rescue German scholars under threat from the Nazis.

1726131725Kremlin: Moscow expected to react if Ukraine uses Western weapons

The Kremlin said on Thursday that allowing Ukraine to use Western weapons to attack Russian territory would deepen Western intervention in the conflict and force Moscow to react, the Tass state news agency reported.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken wraps up a three-nation European tour centered around Ukraine in Poland after hearing repeated pleas from Ukrainian officials to use Western-supplied weapons for long-range strikes inside Russia.

Secretary Blinken traveled to Warsaw on Thursday after spending a day in Kiev with British Foreign Secretary David Lammy, where the two pledged to convey Ukraine’s request to their respective leaders.

President Joe Biden and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer are due to meet in the United States on Friday, with both Washington and London appearing increasingly receptive to allowing Ukraine to use its weapons to strike targets deeper inside Russia than previously approved.

He said energy workers were working hard to restore power and water supply to the hospital early Thursday morning.
