A Ukrainian lawmaker hiding in London is set to appear in court to challenge Zelensky's government's extradition request.

Artem Dmitryuk, a former member of Volodymyr Zelensky's party, told The Independent that he had to leave Ukraine because he opposed a controversial bill that would have closed down the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC).

The extradition request follows a charge of arson related to an incident in 2020 where he attempted to force his way into a political rally.

The MP made a dramatic escape to Britain by taking a taxi to the Moldovan border, crossing through a forest before flying to Italy and then on to London, where his family is.

But Dmitryuk, a deacon of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, is due to appear before Westminster Magistrates' Court on Tuesday to claim he is a victim of political repression by the Zelensky government because of his support for the church.

President Zelensky's attempts to close churches have raised concerns about religious freedom in the Foreign Office and the Church of England.

The Ukrainian government has claimed that the UOC is a Russian spy and has links to Vladimir Putin's allies.

Dmitryuk told The Independent that the British government had been providing him with security since his escape in August.

He said before the trial: There is now political persecution against me, my family, myself and my political views and my support for the UOC.

Dmitryuk represents a district of Odessa, the population of which is predominantly Orthodox.

He insisted that he had no personal problem with Zelensky, that he simply felt that policies he disagreed with were having a negative impact on his constituents.

But he said claims that the UOC was persecuting clergy on the front lines in the war against Russia were wrong.

He said: There are priests on the front lines in our church right now. They are serving there. They are taking the wounded. They are blessing them.
