Statement: Meeting between British and Argentine Foreign Ministers

Looking forward to a new era of constructive cooperation within bilateral relations, characterised by improved dialogue and confidence-building measures, British Foreign Secretary David Lammy and Argentine Foreign, International Trade and Worship Minister Diana Mondino met in New York on 24 September and made progress on a broad agenda covering a range of issues relating to the South Atlantic. It was agreed that the formula for safeguarding sovereignty in paragraph 2 of the Joint Statement of 19 October 1989 would apply to this agenda and its outcomes.

The parties agreed to resume negotiations with the International Committee of the Red Cross to complete the third phase of the humanitarian operation plan and to organize visits by families of fallen soldiers to the island and the graves of the soldiers buried there by the end of 2024.

They also agreed on the need to take concrete steps in the areas of fish conservation and improved connectivity, in line with the agreement reached in 2018, including resuming weekly flights between São Paulo and Egypt, which previously stopped in Córdoba monthly.

These steps will advance a more ambitious agenda for cooperation in a range of areas, in line with the sovereignty formula, aimed at promoting human and economic development and strengthening relations between the island and the continent.

Both the Foreign Minister and Mondino welcomed the steps being taken to improve bilateral relations and agreed to discuss them again when the opportunity arises.
