The United States yesterday called for a 21-day ceasefire on the Israel-Lebanon border to prevent an escalation of the war and give diplomacy there and in Gaza a chance.

Expressing support for the plan were Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III, British Defense Secretary John Healey and Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles, who met today in London at the ministerial meeting of Defense of AUKUS.

France and other allies and partners also support this plan.

“The situation in Lebanon and northern Israel is deeply concerning,” Austin said. Lebanese Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed terrorist group, began firing rockets at Israel in an unprovoked attack the day after the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas terror attack, Austin said.

“Hezbollah has not stopped since. Like any other state, Israel has the right to defend itself. And almost a year later, tens of thousands of Israeli and Lebanese civilians still cannot return home in security, and we now face the risk of a global conflict, another large-scale war, which could be devastating for both Israel and Lebanon, Austin said.

Despite the sharp escalation of recent days, a diplomatic solution remains viable. A diplomatic solution, not a military one, is the only way to ensure that displaced civilians on both sides of the border can finally return home,” Austin said.

An immediate 21-day ceasefire will provide time to conduct the diplomacy necessary to reach a lasting agreement that will allow Israeli and Lebanese civilians to return home safely. This time can also be used to reach and implement an agreement to secure a ceasefire in Gaza and return all hostages home, he said.

“Make no mistake. The United States remains committed to protecting our forces and personnel across the Middle East, and no one should attempt to exploit this crisis or expand this conflict. So we will continue to work without release to avoid another tragic war and find a diplomatic path,” Austin said.

“We were committed from the beginning to helping Israel provide the elements necessary for it to be able to protect its sovereign territory, and that has not changed and will not change in the future,” Austin said.

Healey and Marles said the ceasefire was the only way to achieve long-term peace. The leaders also urged their Lebanese citizens to leave while they still have the chance.
