Weather warnings have been issued as strong winds and heavy rain approach Britain, days after some areas were hit by flooding.

The Met Office has issued a rain warning, warning that further heavy rain is likely to cause travel delays and flooding across much of southern England and south Wales between 4pm on Sunday and 9am on Monday.

The Met Office said 20 to 30 mm of rain could fall within the warning area over the next 9 to 12 hours on Sunday, with 50 to 80 mm of rain possible in some higher elevations.

Met Office meteorologist Becky Mitchell said although it was not a huge amount of rain, the recent weather had caused river levels to be significantly higher and the ground quite saturated, which could lead to further flooding.

The Environment Agency issued 48 flood warnings (flooding is expected) and 90 (possible) across England on Saturday morning.

Meanwhile, a yellow warning has been issued for windy weather across south-west England and Wales from 9am on Sunday until the end of the day.

“Wind gusts up to 50 to 60 miles per hour, large waves, downed trees, travel disruptions and some power outages are possible,” Mitchell said.

Additional rain warnings may be in place for Monday, but drier weather is expected later in the week, she added.

Temperatures are below average on Friday night, with frost expected in many areas across the UK.

The Korea Meteorological Administration said temperatures this weekend will be 3 to 4 degrees below average, with double-digit low temperatures expected on Sunday.

Across the UK there has been heavy rain and localized flooding in recent days, with commuters experiencing widespread disruption to road and rail services.

Some counties in southern and central England have already recorded more than 250% of their average September rainfall, according to the Met Office.

Some parts of the country received more than average monthly rainfall on Monday, with further heavy rain falling on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Around 650 properties are estimated to have been flooded in Bedfordshire, Northamptonshire and the Home Counties, with around 8,200 properties protected, according to the Environment Department.

Rail services between Shrewsbury in Shropshire and Wolverhampton in the West Midlands were canceled on Friday due to severe flooding at Wellington station and fallen trees that had earlier blocked the tracks.

On Thursday evening, the pitch at Wellington's SEAH Stadium, home of football club Telford United, was flooded.

The Marston Vale line in Bedfordshire, which runs between Bedford and Bletchley, has been suspended until Monday due to water standing on the tracks.
