USA leads 11-7 heading into final day of Presidents Cup

MONTREAL — Patrick Cantlay could not have made the putt — he might not have seen the hole — without the lights of a video board and the headlights of golf carts surrounding the 18th green on the final longest day match at the Presidents. Cup.

And then he delivered another “Patty Ice” moment that might have been enough to put the international team's lights out on Saturday.

Scottie Scheffler delivered big late moments in both of his matches, and Cantlay's putt from just under 17 feet in the dark gave the Americans another victory and another point, bringing them within one session of another victory in the Presidents Cup.

“Huge putt,” said U.S. captain Jim Furyk. “If you had to hand-pick someone to make a big putt on your team, I think Pat would come to mind for a lot of people.”

Sunday singles matches

They won the four-ball and four-ball sessions by a margin of 3-1. Cantlay and Xander Schauffele won the 18th against Tom Kim and Si Woo Kim, the supercharged South Korean duo, to give the Americans an 11-7 lead at Royal Montreal.

“Alex helped me read it,” Cantlay said of his winner in the dark. “It was like hitting a cup with some speed, and a putt like that will make me sleep a little better tonight.”

It was Si Woo Kim who gave his team hope from the deep rough beneath the 16th green, and he cupped his cheek in the “Good night” gesture made famous by Stephen Curry at the Olympics from Paris this summer.

It turned out to be an early call.

Tom Kim said he could hear some American players insulting them, although this was not corroborated and Schauffele said he did not know what the 22-year-old was referring to. Most games have been close all week. The crowd was noisy. It gets choppy at times, which is expected in these team competitions.

What hasn't changed is that the Internationals are facing a big deficit.

They need to win eight of 12 singles matches on Sunday to get a draw, and halve another if they want to win for the first time since 1998 – four years before Tom Kim was born – and only the second time since the start of the Presidents Cup. in 1994.

International captain Mike Weir sidelined four players throughout the day Saturday, wanting to call on the teams that helped his team get back into the game with that 5-0 shutout Friday.

One of them was Jason Day, who will be the first eliminated on Sunday against Schauffele.

It's the same deficit from two years ago, and Weir remembers the Internationals – a team facing distractions in 2022 by losing players who defected to the Saudi-backed LIV Golf League – making the Quail Hollow crowd silent and the Americans sweaty.

“We have tremendous confidence in our guys,” Weir said. “It might sound like what happened in Charlotte, but I'm just telling you, maybe there's an improvement in confidence in our team.”

Tom Kim seemed even more determined, bordering on angry.

“I'm so pumped to go out tomorrow…because we've lost so many times, there will be a day where it's just our day,” he said. “I think it’s tomorrow.

“If we fail, we'll try again. That's who we are. We'll keep trying. There will be a time when we win the Cup, and it will be soon.”

Scheffler finished a tight four-ball match with two late birdies in a morning session delayed 90 minutes by fog, then gave the Americans their first foursome lead with a one-foot wedge at the 14th hole that led at another point.

Scheffler started both matches slowly. Collin Morikawa kept them in the four-ball match until Scheffler hit a 195-yard dart to 8 feet for birdie on the 16th, and made a 15-foot putt from the green on the 17th for the win.

Russell Henley carried it in the foursome, especially after Scheffler missed putts from 6 feet and 3 feet as they fell 3 up after five holes. But the world No. 1 player delivered late with a one-footer on the 14th for his first lead and a 12-foot birdie on the next to take control.

“I have the best player in the world on my team and we held on,” Henley said.

Adam Scott, playing in his 11th Presidents Cup without ever being on the winning side, lifted Taylor Pendrith to a 2-for-1 victory in the afternoon foursomes over Brian Harman and Max Homa, the only international point in quartet.

Si Woo Kim and Tom Kim won big against Keegan Bradley and Wyndham Clark in the morning fourball for the only international victory.

They were tied or ahead in every afternoon match at one point until the Americans took control, as they often do. Morikawa and Burns came out of an early hole and beat the Canadian duo of Corey Conners and Mackenzie Hughes on the 18th hole when Hughes hit a bad chip and Conners never came close on the 12-foot par putt.

In the showpiece match of the morning, I made three birdies against Cantlay and Burns to prevent the match from getting out of hand. Cantlay replaced eagle on the 12th for a 2-up lead and he twice stopped the Internationals from coming back by making putts from 25 feet and 18 feet when close.

“This guy is an absolute murderer,” Burns said of Cantlay.
