Israel used US-made bomb to attack Hezbollah leader, US senator says

Sept 29 (Reuters) – The bomb Israel used to kill Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah last week in Beirut was a U.S.-made guided weapon, a U.S. senator said on Sunday.

Mark Kelly, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Air Subcommittee, said Israel used a 2,000-pound (900 kg) Mark 84 series bomb in an interview with NBC. His statement constitutes the first American indication of the weapon used.

“We are seeing increased use of guided munitions, JDAMs, and we continue to provide those weapons,” Kelly said, using an abbreviation that stands for Joint Direct Attack Munitions. “This 2,000-pound bomb that was used, it was a Mark 84 series bomb, to eliminate Nasrallah,” he said.

The Israeli army announced on Saturday that it had eliminated Nasrallah in a strike against the group's central command headquarters in the southern suburbs of Beirut. The Israeli military declined to comment on the weapons used in the attack. The Pentagon was not immediately available for comment.

JDAMs convert a standard unguided bomb using fins and a GPS guidance system into a guided weapon. The United States is Israel's longtime ally and its largest arms supplier.
