British charter flight to leave Lebanon

The Israeli government said the goal of the military operation was to allow 60,000 displaced Israelis to return to their homeland. Hezbollah said its fighters were ready to fight an Israeli invasion.

More than 1,000 people have died in the past two weeks and up to 1 million people could now be displaced, according to Lebanese officials.

Lammy and his U.S. counterpart Antony Blinken spoke by phone on Monday. He said he had seen media reports and both called for “de-escalation”.

He added that Britain would remain in contact with Iran and reiterated his call for a 21-day ceasefire to improve the chances of a political solution.

“The way forward is a political solution, not a military solution,” Lammy said in a speech Tuesday.

His comments come after Sir Keir Starmer last week told British nationals in Lebanon to “leave immediately” as fighting between Israel and Hezbollah intensified.

Britons had previously been advised to book flights out of the UK, but options were limited and most airlines except their own have canceled flights.

The Ministry of Defense has deployed around 700 troops to neighboring Cyprus to prepare for a possible evacuation of British nationals from Lebanon, and the government “continues to advise against all travel to Lebanon”.

Tensions have been rising throughout the Middle East since Hamas militants attacked Israel on October 7 last year, killing about 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages.

According to the Hamas-run Ministry of Health, more than 41,000 people lost their lives in Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip in response to Hamas attacks.

Previously sporadic fighting between Israel and Hezbollah intensified on October 8, a day after an unprecedented attack by Hamas. Hezbollah attacked Israeli positions in solidarity with Hamas.

Hezbollah has fired more than 8,000 rockets into northern Israel and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. They fired anti-tank missiles at armored vehicles and attacked military targets with explosive drones.

Families of the hostages in Gaza held a press conference in London along with relatives of other British-Israelis killed on October 7, following a memorial service in Downing Street.

They said they felt disappointed and urged the government to do more to rescue their relatives. Earlier they met Sir Keir and Lammy.
