Sadiq Khan fears rise in UK hate crimes linked to Middle East violence | hate crime
Sadiq Khan has warned that a rise in violence in the Middle East is likely to lead to an increase in hate crimes in the UK, just as Britain's leading Jewish group warned of the risk of revenge attacks.
The London mayor's warning comes after Israel carried out a series of airstrikes against targets in Lebanon. These airstrikes resulted in the deaths of top Hezbollah leaders and followers, as well as a worrying number of civilians. Khan is pouring additional emergency funding into groups in London fighting hate.
Tensions have risen since Hamas' attack on Israel on October 7, and continued attacks on the Gaza Strip have resulted in large-scale civilian casualties. British officials are also concerned that tensions remain high following this summer's far-right-led riots.
Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Matt Twist said: As the situation in the Middle East becomes uncertain once again, we know that fears and tensions will rise here at home as well. Together we are determined to show there will be zero tolerance for hate crime in London.
Like Muslims in Britain, the Jewish community has seen a significant increase in hate crime since the October 7 attacks on Israel. Israel's clash with Iran-backed Hezbollah has raised concerns that the group, designated a terrorist by the British government, could launch attacks on Jewish targets abroad as part of revenge against Israel.
The Iranian regime has shown signs of readiness to operate on British soil by targeting British dissidents, raising concerns.
The Community Security Trust (CST), which leads Jewish security efforts in the UK, said Hezbollah and Iran have a long record of carrying out terrorism against Jewish and Israeli targets around the world, particularly as a form of revenge.
It's certainly possible that they might do something overseas to seek revenge. [the assassinated Hezbollah leader] The death of Hassan Nasrallah forms an important part of our security plans.
CST warned over the weekend that rising tensions in the Middle East risk sparking new anti-Semitic attacks and terrorist attacks against the Jewish diaspora.
Khan said: “We know that escalating conflict in the Middle East often leads to an increase in hate crime here in London. Over the past year we have seen a completely unacceptable rise in hate crime, particularly anti-Semitism and Islamophobia, which has had a significant impact on London's Jewish and Muslim communities.
Khan said he was already spending $15 million to support victims of hate crimes and tackle hate and extremism in London. An additional $875,000 is being spent to address anti-Jewish and anti-Muslim hatred, including online, due to the crisis in Lebanon, which could escalate in the event of an Israeli ground invasion.

A spokesman for the Mayor of London said grassroots community projects would be undertaken to tackle hate, intolerance, extremism, radicalization and terrorism.
In the Metropolitan area, anti-Semitic hate crimes increased by 286% in the 12 months from September 2023 to August 2024 compared to the same period last year, and anti-Muslim hate crimes increased by 67% during the same period.
Khan said: At a time of heightened tensions and online hate, this plan will continue to build bridges between communities, embrace what we share and help Londoners from all backgrounds and faiths feel welcome. will [and] Be safe and prosper.
