Britain helped block Iranian missiles heading to Israel – POLITICO

“I am deeply concerned that the region is in crisis and that there is a risk of misjudgment,” British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said in a televised address.

Britain recently suspended some arms sales to Israel because a legal review identified risks that the weapons could be used to violate humanitarian law in the war on Gaza that has so far killed more than 40,000 people. The ban earned the new British prime minister a rebuke from Netanyahu.

Starmer said he supported Israel's right to self-defense and that revoking the license did not damage efforts to increase trade between the two countries.

After the Iranian attack, but before British involvement in repelling it was confirmed, the British leader said:

Starmer expressed serious concerns about the situation in the Middle East as calls for a ceasefire were ignored. He said he had spoken with French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to “try to find a political solution” to the conflict.

According to a Downing Street report, the leaders emphasized the need for a ceasefire and de-escalation of tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, in line with UNSC Resolution 1701, which sought to end hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel through the creation of a buffer zone in 2006. .

Prime Minister Starmer, whose government is in close contact with Israeli authorities, also repeatedly urged British nationals in Lebanon to leave the country, saying: “The situation in Lebanon is getting more and more serious. You must leave now. Don't wait.”
