Sir Keir Starmer has warned that Britain stands with Israel and is “deeply concerned” that the Middle East is “in crisis”.

In a televised address from Downing Street on Tuesday evening, the prime minister condemned the Iranian attack, which saw about 200 missiles fired at Israel.

Defense Secretary John Healey later confirmed that British troops had “played their part” in “attempts to prevent further escalation” in the area, but did not specify the exact nature of their involvement.

Sir Kiir, who spoke by phone with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu when the attacks began, said the rockets were aimed at civilian targets and that “it is too early to fully assess the impact.”

“I fully condemn the Iranian regime’s attempts to harm innocent Israelis, escalate an incredibly dangerous situation, and push the region to the brink,” he said.

“We stand with Israel and recognize Israel’s right to self-defense against these attacks.”

Sir Keir said Iran “has been threatening the Middle East for too long” and urged it to “stop these attacks”.

He added, “I am deeply concerned that the region is in crisis and that there is a risk of miscalculation.”

Israel has vowed “there will be repercussions” for the attack, which Iran said was revenge for the killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in Lebanon last week.

Asked whether Britain was prepared to use its military power to help Israel defend itself against Iran's support for militant groups, the Prime Minister said:

“But what I will say is that we support Israel and its right to self-defense. And any relevant updates will be provided in due course.”

Hours after this statement, Prime Minister Healy confirmed that British troops had intervened tonight. However, it is unclear whether or not any personnel were involved in shooting down the Iranian missiles, as were the U.S. military.

The Ministry of Defense has not yet revealed what type of support it has provided to Israel, but RAF Typhoon jets operating from a Cyprus air base were deployed to assist Israel during a previous Iranian attack in April.

“I fully condemn Iran’s attack on Israel,” Healey said.

“British troops took part this evening in efforts to prevent further escalation in the Middle East.

“I would like to thank all the British people involved in the operation for their courage and professionalism.

“The UK fully supports Israel’s right to defend itself and its people against threats.”

The statement came after Sir Keir chaired a ministerial meeting on the situation in the Middle East at Downing Street.

The attacks on Israel began while he was talking to Prime Minister Netanyahu, Number 10 revealed this evening.

Sir Keir did not elaborate on the content of the call but said all discussions with world leaders on the conflict were focused on the need for a ceasefire and a political solution.

“What I have asked is that it is important to create the space and conditions for de-escalation and to find a political path forward,” the prime minister told reporters after his televised address.

He added that he and Prime Minister Netanyahu were able to call for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, which has been under siege for the past year following a Hamas attack on October 7, 2023.

The Prime Minister also reiterated his advice to Britons in Lebanon to leave immediately, saying: “We are doing everything we can to get people out, but the situation is extremely unstable.”
