The Falkland Islands are a British overseas territory in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean. Argentina has long claimed sovereignty over the islands.

Argentina invaded in 1982 to regain sovereignty and says it inherited the Falkland Islands from Spain in the 1800s.

The short but bitter war lasted 74 days, with British forces regaining control on June 14, 1982, after 655 Argentines, 255 British and three Falklanders were killed.

Governor Blake's announcement follows a deal that saw Britain hand over the Chagos Islands to Mauritius after years of negotiations.

This includes Diego Garcia, a tropical atoll used by the U.S. government as a top-secret military base for warships and long-range bombers.
