The UK is set to experience strong winds and heavy rain next week as Hurricane Kirk moves across the Atlantic.

The weather system strengthened to a Category 4 storm on Friday and its remnants threaten to bring unsettled conditions with temperatures expected to drop.

The hurricane is expected to weaken in intensity by the time it reaches Europe, but the Met Office said the threat of damaging rain and winds would remain for some after a mild weekend.

Deputy Meteorological Secretary Chris Bulmer said the exact path and timing of Kirk's low pressure system had not yet been determined, but added: “Across the UK, parts of England and Wales appear to be most at risk of heavy rain and strong winds during Wednesday and Thursday.

“But equally plausible at this stage is the more southerly direction of this system that will see the most destructive conditions impacting France.”

He added that possible weather warnings “will continue to be reviewed over the coming days”. As of Saturday afternoon, the National Weather Service had not released any updates.
