Winds of up to 55 mph are expected to sweep across the country and heavy rain is expected to fall in some areas.

Giving details on the weather system, the Tornado and Storm Research Organization said: “A shortwave trough will move across the ENE this afternoon/evening, accompanied by areas of showers and rain, some of which will be convective. .

“Model guidance on the exact form varies somewhat, but one or more small-scale cycles (mesorrows) may evolve.”

They added that stronger storms could be accompanied by gusty winds, hail up to 1 cm in diameter and occasional lightning falling from clouds to the ground.

The organization warned that isolated tornadoes are possible, especially if mesorows form, creating a “more concentrated hazard path for wind gusts and intermittent tornadoes.”
