Where is Hurricane Milton heading and will it affect the UK?

Hurricane Milton is now making its way across the Atlantic Ocean after leaving Florida on a path of destruction.

The National Hurricane Center described the storm as “very dangerous” and a “serious threat” to Floridians, with millions forced to evacuate as the storm destroyed homes and caused flash flooding.

With multiple deaths reported and the storm weakening to a Category 1 hurricane as it moves through the Atlantic, ITV News looks at what we can expect next.

Where did Hurricane Milton hit?

Milton formed as a tropical depression in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico on Saturday.

It was considered a tropical storm within hours and “rapidly strengthened,” which the U.S. National Hurricane Center defines as a 35 mph increase in wind speeds over a 24-hour period.

By Sunday afternoon, Milton had grown into a Category 1 hurricane, and by Monday, wind speeds peaked at 180 mph, enough to make it a powerful Category 5 hurricane.

Sea surface temperatures in the Gulf of Mexico were about 2 degrees warmer than average.

The ocean provides most of the energy to hurricanes. So there is a huge heat reservoir in the ocean that can power incredibly powerful storms,” Professor Simon Jose from the UK’s National Center for Oceanography told ITV News.

Based on wind speed, Milton was the strongest hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico since Hurricane Rita in 2005. By pressure, Milton was the fifth-strongest hurricane in the Atlantic basin on record, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said.

Mexico did not suffer direct damage from Milton, but it was strong enough to cause flooding and power outages along the Yucatan Peninsula, and many residents were ordered to evacuate.

Milton made landfall near Siesta Key, Florida, around 8:30 p.m. local time Wednesday, and the National Hurricane Center reported winds of 120 mph.

About 90 minutes later, Milton was located about 20 miles northeast of Sarasota.

By early Thursday, Milton was moving toward Florida's east coast as a weakened but still dangerous Category 1 storm with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph.

Where is Milton headed now?

Milton was expected to continue moving from the Florida Peninsula north to the Bahamas.

The Caribbean government said in a statement that it did not expect the Bahamas to be directly affected.

However, a tropical storm warning has been issued, with wind speeds of 25 to 45 mph, localized flooding and the possibility of tornadoes expected.

Milton is expected to weaken to a tropical storm once over open waters of the Atlantic Ocean and transition to an extratropical storm after passing south of Bermuda.

Is the UK also affected?

Milton is expected to weaken to a tropical storm once it is over the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean, and is likely to change into an extratropical storm once it passes south of Bermuda, the National Weather Service said.

The Meteorological Administration added, “In addition, there is a high possibility that the remnants will be absorbed into the frontal area or dissipate in the subtropical Atlantic Ocean.”

“If the remnants of Milton reach the Atlantic as a weakening feature, it could create some forecast uncertainty over the next week.”

Remnants of another hurricane, Kirk, moved northeast across the Atlantic, causing flooding and damaging buildings across Spain, Portugal and France.

However, Kirk, now downgraded to a storm, is expected to move as far as southern England, bringing heavy rain and strong winds to northern France.

The Met Office said earlier this week: “Although northward and southward shifts of the system's track are still possible, the threat of severe impacts from this system on the UK is now much reduced.”
