The GPC has voted to ‘phase out’ PA completely from general practice across the UK.
GP leaders across England have voted in favor of ‘phasing out’ the role of physician associates (PAs) in general practice.
At the BMA's GP Committee UK meeting yesterday, members voted to stop recruiting new PA roles in GP practices and phase out existing roles.
An ‘overwhelming’ majority voted in favor of a motion which declared that having PAs in general practice was ‘fundamentally unsafe’ and that all sessions where PAs treat undifferentiated patients should be stopped immediately.
This is based on the belief that PAs have ‘inadequate training’ to manage such cases.
The BMA said existing PAs, who will be 'phased out', should be given the opportunity to 'retrain into more suitable secondary NHS roles'.
Yesterday's vote at the BMA follows a similar vote in September in which the RCGP took a stance completely opposing the role of PAs in GP practice.
Shortly thereafter, the RCGP published comprehensive scope of practice guidance for PAs which severely restricts current practice.
Responding to GPC UK's vote, chair Dr Katie Bramall-Stainer acknowledged that the role of PAs was a 'challenging and politically charged issue' but stressed that patient safety was 'at the heart of it'.
She said: “It is no secret that general practice desperately needs more staff, but we need to be confident that staff caring for patients are appropriately trained and competent to see patients without supervision.”
'Workload is inextricably linked to staff recruitment and retention, so additional roles should not create more work for already expanded GPs.'
Dr Bramall-Stainer said PAs needed to be able to retrain and take on other roles, but 'the bottom line is to get more GPs into the workforce'.

The conference considers that the role of physician associates in general practice is fundamentally unsafe and:
There should be no new appointments of physician colleagues in general practice. The role of physician associates in general practice should be phased out. The role of the physician associate should be inadequately trained to manage undifferentiated patients, and there should be an immediate reprieve for such sessions.
