Injury and risk to life are likely to occur with winds of up to 80mph expected to hit parts of the UK in the first storm this weekend.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning ahead of Storm Ashley for north-west Scotland on Sunday, and an amber warning for all of Scotland and Northern Ireland and parts of north-west England and Wales.

The Amber Alert is in effect from 9am to midnight on Sunday. The Amber Alert is in effect from 3am to midnight.

Gusts of up to 80mph could hit northwest Scotland, with large waves and beach material being thrown onto coastal roads, beaches and buildings, potentially causing injury and risk of life, the Met Office said.

The area is likely to experience power outages that could affect cell phone coverage and damage to buildings, including tiles flying off roofs.

Road, rail, air and ferry services are likely to be disrupted or cancelled, and roads and bridges may also be closed.

Met Office meteorologist Aidan McGivern said clouds would thicken and winds would strengthen in the early hours of Sunday, hitting Northern Ireland and western England.

He added that the onset of strong winds will be accompanied by heavy rain and strong winds at times.

In western England, winds of up to 50mph to 60mph and heavy rain are possible that day, particularly affecting exposed coasts and hills.

The strongest winds on Sunday will sweep across Northern Ireland and western Scotland, with gusts of up to 70mph possible.

McGivern added that in some parts of western Scotland speeds of 80mph or even faster can be reached.

He said: These types of gusts can cause significant disruption, damage to buildings and disruption of transport at ferry crossings.

Additionally, because these winds coincide with high tides, there is a risk of flooding in coastal communities, so the risk is particularly high.

He added that winds will continue to blow through Sunday, peaking in the evening.

1729350107Why is Storm Ashley coming to the UK?

Met Office meteorologist Aidan McGivern said on Friday evening: At the time of writing, StormAshley was on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, in a relatively shallow area of low pressure.

1729346507Statement issued by the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency

Catherine Evans, SEPA's flood manager, said: Scotland is bracing for the impact of Storm Ashley this weekend. The combination of already high water levels and strong winds poses a risk of coastal flooding across much of the country.

The risk is greatest during high tide, but our message is clear. If you are near the coast at any point you should be extra careful and stay away from waves and water. Be careful when traveling to exposed coastal areas and do not walk or drive through flood water as there may be hidden hazards.

Flood warnings and warnings are in place, so check the website for up-to-date information. We will continue to work with the Met Office to monitor the situation 24/7 and review local flood warnings and local flood warnings as necessary.

We advise people to join Floodline to receive free updates about where they live or travel straight to their mobile phone. People can also check the flood updates for all the latest information and view the three-day Scotland flood forecast to see what to expect ahead.

1729344628Great South Run canceled due to Storm Ashley.

The Great South Run has been canceled on Sunday due to high winds and rain expected from Storm Ashley.

Great Run, which organizes the annual 10-mile race in Portsmouth, said it was monitoring weather conditions but had not improved to the point where Sunday's event could be held safely.

In a statement, Great Run said: The expected winds and gusts will cause damage to event infrastructure, including the finish line and medical facilities around the course.

This, combined with high tide levels, potential debris and coastal exposure, means that safe delivery of the event cannot be guaranteed. The safety of participants, staff and volunteers is our top priority.

We have not taken this decision lightly and have been working all week to ensure we make the best informed decision by liaising closely with the Met Office, health and safety teams, local authorities and key stakeholders.

We know how disappointing this is and we hope you understand why this decision was made. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Participants will be contacted by email with instructions on how to request a refund or defer participation to next year.

1729338107What is a climate bomb?

Meteorologists say we will see a sharp drop in air pressure as Storm Ashley moves out of the Atlantic on Saturday night, a phenomenon dubbed a “weather bomb.”

According to the Met Office, a 'weather bomb' is an informal term for a low-pressure system whose central pressure drops 24 millibars over 24 hours in a process known as explosive cyclogenesis.

The rapid acceleration of air caused by the jet stream above the atmosphere can remove air from the plume, reducing its weight and causing a drop in pressure at sea level.

This in turn sucks in converging air from surrounding areas, making the circulation spin faster and faster.

This will result in strong winds coinciding with high spring tides, creating large waves and the risk of coastal flooding.

These strong winds along with high spring tides can cause some disruption.

Families traveling during the October school holidays are advised to check for cancellations.
