Injury and risk to life are likely to occur with winds of up to 80mph expected to hit parts of the UK in the first storm this weekend.
The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for strong winds as Storm Ashley hits north-west Scotland on Sunday. Amber warnings for very strong winds have been issued for all of Scotland and Northern Ireland, parts of Wales and north-west England.
A more stringent amber warning will be in effect from 9am to midnight on Sunday, with the yellow alert in effect from 3am to midnight.
An additional yellow warning for heavy rain has also been issued for parts of south Wales, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and Somerset from 3am to noon on Sunday. Most affected areas are expected to see between 15 and 25 mm of rain, with up to 65 mm expected to fall on Dartmoor.
Gusts of up to 80mph could hit northwest Scotland, with large waves and beach material being thrown onto coastal roads, beaches and buildings, potentially causing injury and risk of life, the Met Office said.
Power outages in the area are likely, which could disrupt cellphone reception and damage buildings, the office warned, which could cause tiles to fly off roofs.
Road, rail, air and ferry services are likely to be disrupted or cancelled, and roads and bridges may also be closed.

The Met Office has issued two separate gale warnings for Storm Ashley on Sunday (PA Wire).
Sunday's Great South Run was canceled due to high winds and rain expected from the storm.
The Great Run, which organizes the annual 10-mile race in Portsmouth, Hampshire, said weather conditions had not improved enough to safely hold the event.
Organizers said expected winds could damage event infrastructure, including medical facilities, while high tides, exposed coastal portions of the route and potential debris could create safety issues.
On Friday evening, Met Office meteorologist Aidan McGivern said: “At the time of recording, Storm Ashley was on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, in a relatively shallow area of low pressure.”
As it is brought in by the jet stream during Saturday, it will rapidly deepen and become a particularly deep area of low pressure, bringing widespread winds and gusts in excess of 60 mph across the western and northern parts of the country.

He said clouds would thicken and winds would strengthen in the early hours of Sunday, hitting Northern Ireland and western England.
In western England, winds of up to 50mph to 60mph and heavy rain are possible that day, particularly affecting exposed coasts and hills.
The strongest winds on Sunday will sweep across Northern Ireland and western Scotland, with gusts of up to 70mph possible.
McGivern added that in some parts of western Scotland speeds of 80mph or even faster can be reached.
He said: These types of gusts can cause significant disruption, damage to buildings and disruption of transport at ferry crossings.
Additionally, because these winds coincide with high tides, there is a risk of flooding in coastal communities, so the risk is particularly high.
Winds are expected to continue until Sunday, peaking in the evening, he added.
The Environment Agency has issued 41 flood warnings in England, meaning flooding is expected, and 132 flood warnings, meaning flooding is possible. The warning covers the River Severn, the south coast of Cornwall and several areas of the Wye Estuary.
In Scotland, the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency issued 16 flood warnings, and 17 warnings were issued in places as far afield as Stonehaven, Ayr and Grangemouth. There are around 13 warnings in place in Wales, eight of them on the south coast and three in the west.
Storm Ashley is expected to dissipate on Monday, but Met Office forecaster Dan Stroud said strong winds continuing into Monday morning meant fallen debris and trees could impact commuters early in the week.
A final weather warning will be in place for Scotland north of Fort William from midnight on Saturday until 9am on Monday.
Police Scotland urged drivers not to make unnecessary journeys this weekend, while Transport Scotland warned public transport, including the ferry network, was likely to be disrupted.
“A windy period is expected across the UK through Sunday and Monday, but some disruption is likely across Scotland, Northern Ireland, north-west England and north-west Wales,” the statement said.
These strong winds along with high spring tides can cause some disruption.
Families traveling during the October school holidays are advised to be cautious about cancellations.
