Zayn Malik postpones US tour due to Liam Payne's death

Zayn Malik has announced that he is postponing the US leg of his Stairway to the Sky tour following the death of Liam Payne.

Malik took to his Instagram Story on Saturday morning to share the news, after his fellow One Direction band member died on Wednesday after falling from the third floor balcony of his hotel room in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

He wrote: “Given the heartbreaking loss experienced this week, I have made the decision to postpone the US leg of the STAIRWAY TO THE SKY tour. The dates are rescheduled for January and I will post them as soon as everything is sorted out in the coming days.

The message concluded: “Your tickets will remain valid for the new dates, I love you all and thank you for your understanding.”

Malik paid tribute to Payne on Friday with a lengthy post shared on his Instagram alongside a photo of the two of them when they were much younger. He began by sharing that he found himself speaking out loud to his late friend, hoping he could hear him.

“I can’t help but selfishly think that there were so many more conversations to be had in our lives,” he wrote. “I never had the chance to thank you for supporting me through the most difficult times of my life. When I was 17 I missed home, you would always be there with a positive attitude and a reassuring smile and let me know that you were my friend and that I was loved. Even though you were younger than me, you were always more sensible than me, you were stubborn, opinionated and you didn't care to tell people when they were wrong. Even though we clashed many times over this, I always secretly respected you for it.

He praised Payne's musical talents, noting that he was “the most qualified” of all the members of One Direction. “I knew nothing in comparison, I was a novice kid with no experience and you were already a professional and I was always happy to know that no matter what was happening on stage, we could always count on you to know what direction steer the ship next,” Malik continued.

He concluded his tribute with: “I lost a brother when you left us and I can't explain to you what I would give to hug you one last time and say goodbye properly and tell you that I loved and respected you darling. I will forever cherish all the memories I have with you in my heart, there are no words that justify or explain how I feel right now other than devastated. I hope that wherever you are right now, you are well and at peace and you know how much you are loved. I love you my brother.

Malik also released a joint statement on the loss of Payne with the group, which included Harry Styles, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson.

The English singer-songwriter died from trauma and internal and external bleeding, according to an autopsy carried out in the Argentine capital after a fall from the third floor. Buenos Aires police told The Associated Press in a statement that his fall resulted in “extremely serious injuries.” Doctors confirmed his death on the spot, the press release said.
