Verstappen wins US F1 GP sprint as Norris makes mistake

Max Verstappen took his 11th sprint victory on Saturday at the Circuit of the Americas while his title rival Lando Norris lost points to Carlos Sainz on the final lap.

Verstappen took pole position on Friday afternoon and pulled away from Russell, covering the inside line to prevent any lunging from the Mercedes. From then on, he kept his medium tires to manage the gap with Norris – who was unable to catch up with the Red Bull.

Norris, who moved from fourth to second at the expense of Charles Leclerc and Russell at the start, appeared to be in contention for second place in the closing stages.

However, he locked up his medium tires at Turn 1 on the final lap of the race to allow Carlos Sainz to pass for second place – despite being fifth on the grid.

With his tires screaming, Norris left the track shortly after this jam. Leclerc looked destined for third place in the sprint, but he was caught off guard by Norris after that wide moment. Taking evasive action, Leclerc almost hit the rear of the McLaren and had to drop back to settle for fourth – but he complained about the title contender moving under braking.

Norris was later cleared of “erratic” driving.

Lively battle of Sainz and Leclerc

The last place on the podium was won by Sainz after a wheel-to-wheel battle with his teammate Leclerc.

Beaten by Norris at the start, Leclerc tried to overtake Russell at the end of the back straight but the Mercedes then held on. This gave Sainz a window to attack his teammate, the two Ferraris side by side in sector two.

Leclerc remained ahead of his teammate in the battle for fourth place and tried, via radio, to cancel Sainz's attack. Sainz was relentless and on lap three he dove on the inside of Leclerc into turn 15. Both men lost traction coming out of the corner and Sainz was now safe to pursue Russell.

On lap nine, Sainz overtook Russell for third and Leclerc followed suit a lap later – the Briton, now fifth, complaining about his left front tire on the radio.

Sainz was trailed by Leclerc in the closing stages of the race and it looked like the Monaco driver was going to find himself half a second off fourth place – before Norris' late tire problems shook up the top three.

Mercedes disappears

Russell's pace suffered significantly after he exhausted his tires trying to keep up with Norris in the early stages, and after being overtaken by the Ferraris, he almost fell into the clutches of teammate Lewis Hamilton.

Hamilton, however, finished sixth, three seconds behind his teammate.

Neither Mercedes was on the pace of Red Bull leader Norris nor the Ferraris on Saturday afternoon.

Haass Kevin Magnussen took seventh place, and his teammate Nico Hulkenberg was 1.5 seconds behind him in eighth place, for the final point.

Perez and Piastri are absent

Sergio Perez started 11th and Oscar Piastri 16th – and neither of them managed to crack the top eight in points.

One of the few drivers to choose new medium tires over used medium tires, RB Yuki Tsunoda caused problems for Perez when he attempted to take ninth place from Red Bull on lap 13.

Tsunoda was aggressive to the limit and while he was putting intense pressure on the Red Bull driver, a block took him out of the race and caused him to go off the track and lose another place to from Piastri at the end of the sprint.

Williams' Franco Colapinto was a second behind Tsunoda for 12th while debutant Liam Lawson finished 16th – ahead of pit lane starter Alex Albon – in the other RB.
