UK weather: Storm Ashley expected to hit with winds of up to 80mph | uk news

Warnings for wind and rain are in place across the UK as the first storm of the season arrives.

The Met Office said Storm Ashley was “likely” to bring injury and risk of life, and an amber warning for strong winds was in place across Scotland and Northern Ireland.

An amber warning for north-west Scotland will remain in place until midnight, with the Met Office warning: “There may be a risk of injury and life from large waves and beach material being thrown onto coastal roads, beaches and private property.”

Met Office meteorologist Dan Stroud said “very strong, severe gales” on Sunday could coincide with high tides, resulting in “very large waves”.

A yellow warning for strong winds remains in place for northern Scotland from midnight until 9am on Monday.

Further south, the Met Office has issued a yellow warning for travel disruption and power outages due to flooding until noon on Sunday for south-west England and South Wales.

Mr Stroud said strong winds were expected to continue until Monday morning, meaning “fallen debris and trees” could affect commuters early in the week.

Road users in Scotland have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel if possible, and the Great South Run in Portsmouth, Hampshire, held on Sundays, has been canceled due to weather-related safety concerns.

Police Scotland advised motorists to plan ahead and avoid unnecessary journeys where possible as road chaos is very likely, while Transport Scotland warned of possible delays for public transport, including the ferry network.

Meteorologist Ellie Glaisyer said: “Parts of western Scotland could see gusts of 70-80mph during the afternoon. The afternoon will be drier and brighter for most of England and Wales with sunny spells.”

Winds are expected to ease on Monday as the rain moves southeast. The north is expected to be very windy throughout this week.

The Environment Agency's website shows 41 flood warnings on Sunday morning (flooding is expected) and 132 flood warnings (flooding possible).

The warning covers the River Severn, the south coast of Cornwall and several areas of the Wye Estuary.

Natural Resources Wales said three flood warnings and 13 flood alerts were in place, while the Scottish Environment Protection Agency said it had 16 flood warnings in place, along with 17 alerts.
