Millions of Britons are poised to be plunged into chaos within hours as the eye of Storm Ashley packs 80mph winds around parts of the UK. This is the first storm of the season to make sudden landfall in the UK within hours.

The deep low pressure system flowing in over the Atlantic Ocean has been named by Ireland's Meteorological Service, Met Eireann, as it is set to be at its strongest point when it reaches over Northern Ireland tomorrow (October 20).

But that doesn't mean the rest of the UK won't be affected. The Met Office has issued a rare yellow weather warning for winds for parts of Scotland. A much larger yellow weather warning will run simultaneously over a vast area.

People under an amber alert are likely to lose power and cell phone signal. Damage to buildings, disruption to public transport and roads, road closures and risk to life are possible.

Ashley is expected to arrive with a bang and the Joint Cyclone Center has forecast the storm will be “upgraded” to a Category 3 cyclone on its southwest approach tonight before being downgraded once again as impacts are felt.

The yellow alert is in effect from 9am until just before midnight tomorrow.

While a yellow warning was issued, Jim Dale, senior meteorologist at the Met Office, claimed there was a 20% risk of a red warning being issued.

In an interview with Express.co.uk, he said: “It is already expected to be a cyclone of some kind, in that the storm will have a center of 954mb as it moves towards us from the Atlantic later tonight. A cyclone itself generally refers to storms in the Indian Ocean and Coral Sea; These are similar to typhoons and hurricanes in other parts of the Earth, so this is not a classic tropical cyclone, it's just a play on words.

“Still, wind gusts of around 80 mph are expected in the amber zone, and rising spring tides will make this a very hazardous event internally.

“But this mainly applies to the North of England and West Wales. If there is an upgrade the amber warning will change to red, but at the moment there is only a 20% chance of that happening.”
