UK weather: Hurricane-force winds whipping from a powerful jet stream of more than 200mph.

Storm Ashley, the first named storm of the season, battered the UK with hurricane-force winds of up to 80mph, prompting the Met Office to issue warnings for several parts of the country.

An amber warning for strong winds has been issued for all of Scotland and Northern Ireland, with an amber warning in place for north-west Scotland from 9am to midnight on Sunday.

Met Office meteorologist Dan Stroud warned that “very strong, severe gales” coinciding with high spring tides could result in “very large waves”.

The storm poses a serious threat to public safety, with the Met Office saying “large waves and beach material being thrown onto coastal roads, shores and buildings are likely to cause injury and risk to life.”

Powerful storms formed as low-pressure systems, traveling into the jet stream, deepened rapidly through a process known as explosive cyclogenesis, or 'weather bombing'.

Storm Ashley low moves poleward and into the left exit of the jet stream, deepening quickly.

The Met Office has a yellow and amber warning.

Meteorological Administration

Netweather forecaster Nick Finnis explained in a blog post about the storm: “A fairly innocuous looking area of low pressure this morning in the central North Atlantic, north of the Azores, will deepen rapidly later today, moving poleward of a powerful jet stream exceeding 200 mph and moving into the exit area to the left of the jet stream's development.

“This exit region of the jet stream is where very strong winds rise upward and dissipate the air above, creating a void that must be filled by air rising from below.

“This ultimately causes air to converge at the surface and lowers the pressure at the surface, which helps the low pressure area to deepen explosively.”

Meteorologists observed a 44hPa decrease in the storm's central pressure within 24 hours, a figure that far exceeds the criteria for a 'weather bomb'.

Northern Ireland is in a similar situation, with a yellow weather warning in place until midnight. The public has been advised to travel only when absolutely necessary.

An amber alert has been issued in south-west England and South Wales until noon on Sunday, warning residents of possible travel disruptions and power outages.

Met Office meteorologist Ellie Glaisyer said: “Parts of western Scotland could see wind gusts of 70 to 80mph during the afternoon.”

High winds are expected to continue into Monday morning, potentially causing “downed debris and trees” that could impact commuters early in the week.
