Leclerc leads Ferrari 1-2 as penalty leaves Norris behind Verstappen

Charles Leclerc took his third victory of the season with victory at the United States Grand Prix over Carlos Sainz for a Ferrari one-two finish, while Lando Norris lost third place with a five-second penalty in a fierce battle with Max Verstappen .

The Monegasque got off to a fast start and threw himself at the front row duo of Max Verstappen and Lando Norris, cutting down the inside of Turn 1 and escaping into the fast corners with the lead.

He immediately moved 1.6 seconds ahead at the end of the first lap to stave off the threat from Verstappen with DRS, the Dutchman benefiting from a conservative approach from Norris into the first corner to regain second place.

Leclerc then had to defend against Verstappen after a safety car intervened midway through the third lap, caused by Lewis Hamilton crashing out at Turn 18 and his Mercedes stranding in the gravel to cap a torrid weekend .

Although Verstappen stayed with Leclerc on the restart, the Ferrari driver covered the Red Bull through the complex of turns 2 to 8 to ensure there was no threat from behind.

After long starting the race with a single stop, which proved to be the most popular strategy, Leclerc exited the pits following his lap 26 stop behind the long-running McLarens as Norris and Oscar Piastri looked to recover a tire shifted in the final stages of the race.

It all boiled over on lap 52, where Norris tried to take Verstappen on the outside – but both drivers went wide and Norris went off track to take the lead. Hoping to cover the threat of a five-second penalty, Norris attempted to drop Verstappen but only accumulated a 4.1-second advantage.

The stewards duly awarded Norris the full five seconds for overtaking, ensuring Verstappen took the podium by just 0.9 seconds.

Piastri was another 1.5 seconds behind Norris in the final race times to finish fifth, 34 seconds ahead of George Russell – who converted a pit lane start following his qualifying crash in sixth, thanks to a late overtake on Sergio Perez.

Nico Hulkenberg took eighth place to ensure Haas could put two points between him and RB in the fight for sixth place in the constructors' championship, although Liam Lawson celebrated his return to F1 with ninth place with the counter-strategy to start on hard ground.

Franco Colapinto collected the final point after also benefiting from a start on hard tyres, eight seconds ahead of Magnussen – whose impressive run was canceled out by two stops.
