Britain willing to hand over Gaza information to war crimes court

The UK has said it will consider providing information collected from surveillance flights over Gaza to the International Criminal Court (ICC) if requested.

The ICC is already investigating alleged war crimes committed by Hamas and Israel.

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) has reportedly conducted hundreds of reconnaissance flights over the Gaza Strip since December, using Shadow R1 reconnaissance aircraft based in nearby Cyprus.

The Ministry of Defense said the flight was intended to collect information related to hostages taken by Hamas on October 7 last year.

However, the ICC has indicated that it is willing to share information related to war crimes with the ICC.

The Ministry of Defense has denied reports that it is providing Israel with wider targeting intelligence or that RAF aircraft were used to fly weapons to Israel during the war in Gaza.

“In accordance with our international obligations, we will consider formal requests from the International Criminal Court to provide information relevant to the investigation of war crimes,” the ministry said in a statement.

“The UK does not take part in the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

“Our mission has been narrowly defined to focus solely on the release of hostages, including British nationals, and the RAF has been conducting regular unarmed flights for this sole purpose since December 2023.”

There has yet to be an official request from the ICC.

In May, ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan said there were reasonable grounds to believe that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and Hamas leaders Yahya Shinwar, Mohammed Deif, and Ismail Haniyeh were criminally responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity. Deif, Haniyeh and Sinwar have all died in recent weeks, and requests for arrest warrants for Netanyahu and Gallant still have to be approved by ICC judges.
