The Met Office has predicted snow is likely in parts of the UK and has said it could arrive as early as next week.

Ice, fog and heavy fog are expected this weekend, but forecasters say snow is likely in northern and eastern England in early November.

In its long-term forecast for October 30 to November 8, the Met Office said: By early November, the weather is likely to (briefly) get much colder or brighter, with snow showers possible in the north and east. However, it is possible that we may move out of the UK or the mild conditions may remain the same.

Either way, conditions are likely to remain mainly stable going forward, with more unsettled weather becoming more likely later in the period.

The Meteorological Administration said clear weather will follow this weekend. Dry and bright weather is expected across northern England, Wales, the Midlands and south-west England on Saturday, with cloudy conditions elsewhere.

On Sunday, heavy rain will spread to northern regions and gradually move south during the day.

Temperatures in the southwest on Saturday, the weekend, will rise to 16 degrees.

There is a chance of mostly rain or occasional rain from Monday to Wednesday, the Meteorological Administration said.

But starting Wednesday, high pressure will appear, bringing with it often calm and settled weather, the body said.

The spokesperson added: Initially a bit cloudy with some fog and fog likely in the south, but the far north could look slightly more unsettled with stronger winds and rain possibly passing through.

They added that snow is likely across northern and eastern parts of England.

It comes amid reports Scottish towns are bracing for a 150-mile-long snow storm that threatens to engulf them.

But the Met Office warned that headlines do not always reflect reality, adding: Snow is likely to be limited to the northern highlands, as usual for the year.
