Iran points finger at US after Israeli attack

The United States allowed Israel to attack Iran early Saturday, Tehran's foreign minister said, as questions arise over whether Tehran will once again retaliate against Israel and further escalate tensions in Middle East.

“The complicity of the United States in Saturday's Israeli aggression is very clear to us,” Syed Abbas Araghchi said on Sunday, in comments reported by Iranian state media.

Israel confirmed on Saturday morning that it had carried out “precise strikes on military targets in Iran” after what the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) described as “months of continuous attacks” from Tehran.

A senior official in President Joe Biden's administration said Friday evening that Israel had targeted “multiple” sites across Iran, but that the United States “did not participate in that military operation.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the strikes had “severely” damaged Iran's defenses and its ability to produce missiles for use against Israel. The Israeli leader later thanked the United States for “its close coordination and assistance” during the attack.

Iran's official IRNA news agency published a statement from the country's General Staff on Sunday morning, saying that Israeli warplanes within 62 miles of the Iranian border “in Iraqi airspace controlled by the The United States had fired a number of aerial missiles at Iranian targets in the early hours of the day.

Newsweek has contacted the White House for comment via email.

Israel and Iran rarely strike each other directly from their soil, but Tehran supports Lebanon-backed Hezbollah, the influential political party and militant group that Israel is fighting across its northern border.

Iran also supported Hamas, the Palestinian militant organization that launched the deadly Oct. 7 attacks in Israel that killed about 1,200 people, with another 251 taken hostage in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip. .

Israel is committed to eradicating Hamas, and its highly destructive war has reduced much of the densely populated Palestinian territory to rubble over the past year. More than 42,000 people have been killed, according to Hamas-run health authorities in Gaza.

An Israeli operation against Iran has been expected for weeks, after Tehran launched around 200 ballistic missiles at the country in early October. The Israeli military said at the time that most of the missiles were intercepted, but there was some minor damage.

In April, Iran launched more than 300 missiles and drones at Israel in its first-ever direct attack on Israelis from Iranian territory. Tehran said the airstrike was a retaliatory strike after the killing of seven members of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in Damascus, Syria's capital. Israel has not commented on the strike.

The United States helped intercept both attacks on Israel and recently provided the country with an additional air defense battery, designed to repel ballistic missile strikes.

Military planes struck “missile manufacturing facilities used to produce the missiles that Iran has fired at the State of Israel over the past year,” the Israeli military said on Saturday. The fighter jets also hit “additional Iranian surface-to-air missile arrays and air capabilities, which were intended to restrict Israel's freedom of air operation in Iran,” the Israeli military said.

The Iranian military said the attacks focused on the area around the capital, as well as the Khuzestan and Ilam provinces bordering Iraq.

State media reported that the attacks were “successfully thwarted”, while Iran said four of its employees had been killed. Radar units present in the three provinces “suffered “minor and ineffective” damage,” the Iranian armed forces said.

Israel does not appear to have struck Iranian oil facilities or nuclear sites, the most controversial targets and those most likely to risk further escalation. Rafael Mariano Grossi, head of the U.N. nuclear watchdog, said Saturday that “Iran's nuclear facilities have not been hit.”

The New York Times reported that Israel had destroyed air defenses protecting a number of Iranian oil and petrochemical plants, among other targets, citing Iranian and Israeli officials.

“We fully reserve our right to respond duly to this aggression, which cannot be separated from the Israeli genocide in Gaza and the bloodshed in Lebanon,” Araghchi said in a statement posted on social media.

Araghchi told the United Nations on Saturday that Tehran would be able to launch a “legal and legitimate response to these criminal attacks at the appropriate time.”

“If Iran chooses to respond once again, we will be ready, and there will be consequences for Iran once again,” a senior Biden official said.

“However, we do not want this to happen,” the official added. “This should end this direct exchange of fire between Israel and Iran.”
